Down on the corner of Congress and Fourth Avenue, The Funky Monk is reopening its dining room with new dishes, cocktails, Sunday brunch, and a “wraparound” patio.
“We are very happy to have The Funky Monk’s doors back open and could not be more pleased to be back serving our fans in Tucson once again,” said S. Barrett Rinzler, founder of Square One Concepts.

The restaurant and bar took advantage of their time off — adding new menu items and even bringing in a Sunday brunch. The brunch menu has the likes of Breakfast Tacos, a Hangover Bowl, Nutella and Banana Pancakes, and Rosé Cakes.
If brunch isn’t you’re thing, The Funky Monk has tacked on other daily dishes such as the Super Bagel Bites, several new sandwiches and paninis, and the Mama Mia with Meatballs.

So, what about the drinks, right?
They’ve got 24 beers on tap, select house wines, and a variety of cocktails to quench your thirst. The bar is mixing up slushies now, too, which come with either rum or vodka in strawberry, peach puree, and other flavors.
At first glance, you’ll notice an updated interior with leather lounge chairs and plenty of bar and table seating (socially distanced), but outside there are changes, too. You’ve got an option to sit out on the extended patio that wraps around the side — providing a nice view of the Prince mural on the Rialto Theatre’s wall.

The Funky Monk’s new hours are 4 p.m. – midnight on Wednesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Sunday, and a Happy Hour from 4 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday – Friday.
The Funky Monk is located at 350 E. Congress St. and can be reached at (520) 777-5560. For more information, visit funkymonktucson.com.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
