It’s like March Madness, but with beer, and they’re calling it the “longest, largest, and hoppiest” event the taprooms have ever done. Game on, Tucson.
Both Tap & Bottle locations are kicking off a five-week-long IPA tournament — dubbed as Jul-IPA: The Road to National IPA Day — with the Final Four happening on National IPA Day, Thursday, August 5.

The battle is already brewing so if you want to participate you better hop right on it soon.
Here’s how it works:
- The first round will be 16 head-to-head matchups
- Pick a match-up
- Drink the beers
- Vote for your favorite.
That’s all you have to do.
Also, you’ll be able to participate in as many matchups as you can — as few as you want, too. The remaining rounds will play out in a similar way, and the Fina Four wraps up on National IPA Day with in-house flight events at both locations.

If you’re game and are pumped about helping your favorite IPA win it all, print out your bracket online or pick up one at Tap & Bottle Downtown or Tap & Bottle North.
Tap & Bottle shared the following about the voting process on Facebook:
“If you are going to vote, please try the beers. Try not to go off past experiences and have an open mind. Have fun trying the beers. We will post winners of each round online and on the big brackets at each location.”
Therefore, you have two weeks to complete the first-round matchups. Which cold ones are you going to crack open and guzzle down first?
Tap & Bottle Downtown is located at 403 N. Sixth Ave. and Tap & Bottle North is located at 7254 N. Oracle Rd. For more information, follow Tap & Bottle’s Facebook event page.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
