La Mesa Tortillas recently announced that they will be closing their location at 3684 W. Orange Grove Rd. this month. This is the shop found in the same strip as Crying Onion Cafe and the newly opened Tio Ben’s Mexican Grill — the corner of Orange Grove and River Road.
The shop’s last full day of service is Saturday, May 11. From Tuesday, May 14 – Friday, May 24, La Mesa Tortillas will be open to sell only tortillas and tamales (all other food and drinks will not be available).

The Aguilar family shared the news on Facebook, giving their loyal fans a heads-up about the closure.
“It has been our pleasure serving the North Tucson and Marana communities these past 10 years,” they shared. “Our customers at La Mesa Tortillas NW have become our friends and we will deeply miss our daily interactions with you. We do hope you will continue to visit us at our midtown location at Pima and Alvernon, and our eastside store at Broadway and Pantano.”
The other locations are still up and running and ready to serve you at 3923 E. Pima St. and 7823 E. Broadway Blvd.
From the outside and the name, one might assume that La Mesa Tortillas is just another tortilleria, but it’s also a restaurant where you can get full plates and bulk food to go. Their tortillas are special because they use no preservatives or additives, and they ship. They also make memorable tamales that people are said to crave upon moving away from the Old Pueblo.
La Mesa Tortillas is located at 3684 W. Orange Grove Rd. (until Friday, May 24), 3923 E. Pima St., and 7823 E. Broadway Blvd. For more information, visit lamesatortillas.com.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
