Back in July of this year, the spirits of the Three Sisters were present at the Borderlands Brewing Company production facility. Once again, brewers from Arizona and Mexico teamed up to brew the 2023 edition of Las Hermanas — a Vienna lager that also celebrates the 200th anniversary of U.S.-Mexico relations.
Las Hermanas, which is “the sisters” in Spanish, was dreamed up and brewed by Hispanic female brewers hailing from both sides of the U.S./Mexico border in a celebration of solidarity, diplomacy, and cerveza. The same original recipe is being brewed again in Mexico City.

“This is a project where we brew with women all throughout Arizona and Mexico,” said Ayla Kapahi, director of production at Borderlands Brewing. “We brew the same beer on both sides of the U.S./Mexico border.”
“The idea behind it is to raise awareness, education, and to get women collaborating,” Savanna Saldate of Borderlands Brewing has expressed in the past. “It’s actually my favorite time of year and favorite project we do.”
Taste the Beer!
Now, the big milestone will be unveiled to the local beer community on Saturday, September 16. Head on down to Borderlands Brewing’s downtown location, 119 E. Toole Ave., at 5 p.m. for a toast led by Ayla Kapahi, Visit Tucson, and members of the Mexican consulate.
“Following the toast, we’ll enjoy our latest brew’s unveiling and the soulful melodies of Salvador Duran,” said Es Teran, owner of Borderlands Brewing. “It’s an evening designed not only to showcase our newest creation but also to express our profound gratitude for your unwavering support.”
Hispanic Heritage Month
Plus, the beer is ready just in time for Hispanic Heritage Month, happening from September 15 – October 15 all throughout Tucson. Every day, local community partners will host concerts, art exhibitions, and markets to pair with our internationally recognized food scene.

The month-long celebration pays homage to Tucson’s rich Hispanic heritage, showcasing the essence of the people who make it an outstanding place to live. Pima County will kick off the festivities with a proclamation and lighting of the Historic Courthouse Dome in red, green, and white for Hispanic Heritage Week.
Borderlands Brewing Company is located at 119 E. Toole Ave. For more information, visit borderlandsbrewing.com or follow Borderland Brewing on Facebook and Instagram.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
