Monday Munchies is supported by Botanica.
Tommy D’s, the sandwich shop near Skate Country on 22nd Street, has had a couple of names in the past — Luke’s then followed by Kenny D’s.
However, the spot has remained a local sandwich staple on the east side now for nearly 40 years and Tommy McCrea of Tommy D’s is keeping that theme going. The crew recently celebrated their second anniversary in the driver’s seat at 8060 E. 22nd St.

When it comes to quality, Tommy D’s isn’t skimping out!
Their beef is all Angus and goes through a two-day process of cooking and resting, marinates with its au-jus to finish the process, and then gets added to a freshly baked baguette. Ta-da! A Chicago-style Italian beef sandwich at your fingertips here in the Old Pueblo.
The Chicago Dog is a munchies-melter, too.
Vienna beef dog, a poppyseed bun, peppers, dill spear, tomatoes, celery salt, vibrant green relish, and spicy mustard — everything that crafts an authentic Chicago Dog.

The Chicago Dog and Italian Beef are just the tip of the Windy City iceberg, too. Burgers, hot wings, salads, meatball subs, and cheesesteaks are a few other menu items that are worth the drive if you don’t frequent the east side of Tucson.
Pile it all in and burn it off next door at Skate Country! A few runs around the rink will have you thinking about what to eat next.
Tommy D’s is located at 8060 E. 22nd St. #100. For more information, call (520) 722-8900 and visit tommydscrafteats.com.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
