Whiskey Del Bac Presents “Armchair Anthropology: Chocolate at Chaco Canyon”
Thursday, October 24 from 6 – 8 p.m.
Enjoy a chocolate-inspired Whiskey Del Bac cocktail or other libation while listening to an exciting talk about ancient chocolate-drinking traditions in the Southwest.
This presentation is FREE to attend. The cost of your drinks is on your own. No RSVP is required.
Dr. Barbara Mills will discuss how archaeological research has helped us understand life at Chaco Canyon (ca. A.D. 1000-1125), including connections with Mesoamerica, how chocolate was entwined with social status, and the role of serendipity in archaeology. Her talk is based on the work of Dr. Patricia Crown and Dr. Jeffrey Hurst.
“We can’t wait for this,” said Stephen Paul, co-founder of Whiskey Del Bac. “What was the significance of cacao for the Chaco culture to value trading for it all the way from Mesoamerica? Parrot feathers, shells we’ve known about forever. But cacao? This will be riveting.”
Dr. Mills is a Regents Professor in the School of Anthropology, University of Arizona, specializing in Southwest Archaeology and ceramic analysis. Her work has been published in over 100 articles and book chapters, and she is the author or editor of 10 books, including The Oxford Handbook of Southwest Archaeology (2017).
Whiskey Del Bac Fall 2024 Distiller’s Cut Release Party
Saturday, October 26 from 3 – 6 p.m.
Enjoy live music from Gabriel Naïm Amor, food for sale from Parkie Sandwich, cocktails, small bites, samples of the Distiller’s Cut, and other Whiskey Del Bac offerings.
At 4:30, join local wine expert Arielle DeSoucey as she discusses the production of Pinot Noir, followed by a brief talk by Whiskey Del Bac Head Distiller Mark A. Vierthaler on the finishing process.

“Our annual Distiller’s Cuts are ways to explore the seasonality and complexity of American Single Malt Whiskey,” said Vierthaler. “Our Fall 2024 blend leans into the heavier flavors of autumn without being too weighed down.”
The special release started with Whiskey Del Bac’s unsmoked single malt, finished in a Pinot Noir barrel from Walnut Ridge Vineyard in Junction City, Oregon. It was then blended with Del Bac’s famous mesquite-smoked single malt, which was finished in Brazilian Amburana wood.
“The result is a whiskey dripping with bright grape skin notes, finishing with lingering notes of baking spice and graham cracker,” said Vierthaler. “Think fallen leaves, cool evening rain and pumpkin patches.”
The event is free! Bottles, cocktails, and food are available to purchase at the event.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
