National Pi Day is meant to be an annual celebration of mathematical fun and equations, but that doesn’t mean local businesses can’t create their own spin on the holiday.
Besides, a slice of pie is a great way to honor the day.
Whether it’s a baked pie that’s crumbling right before you or a gooey slice of cheesy pizza that’s come straight out of the oven, the following spots in Tucson have you covered.
Beads of Courage
3230 N. Dodge Blvd., Suite J
Beads of Courage at the Metal Arts Village is throwing their annual Pie Festival from noon to 3 p.m.
They’ll be serving up slices of home-baked pie, whole pies to take home, and a fun contest that crowns the king or queen of the Pie Festival. In addition, there will be live music by Zack Freitas from 1 – 3 p.m., and a free polymer clay bead making class (must pre-register), and a bead stringing activity.
Pie Festival Prices
- Slice of pie is $4
- Whole pie is $20
- Bead stringing activity is $5
- Pick up a copy of an exclusive recipe booklet, “The Art of Baking for the People You Love,” for $15
Funds raised at the Pie Festival support the Barbara Eckhoff and Ethel Gribbon fund at Beads of Courage. The fund provides food to nurture patients, families and clinicians at children’s hospitals nationwide during our arts-in-medicine workshops and training sessions.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
