The Kava Den, which is The Kava Bar’s second location, officially opened its doors at 67 E. Pennington St. on Monday, February 13.

“Come help us find our flow.” The Kava Den shared on Instagram.
At the moment, the new spot, which is next to Urban Fresh and Raptor Canyon Cafe, is open from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. on Sunday – Thursday and 11 a.m. – 1 a.m. on Friday – Saturday. Plus, there is a big grand opening event happening on Thursday, February 23 (stay tuned for more details on that as we creep closer to the date).
If you’ve yet to try kava, the roots are ground into a pulp and added to cold water. This then results in a thick brew. Over time, it’s been compared to the social equivalent of having glasses of wine in France.

Here in Tucson, you can get it a few different ways at the Kava Den and Kava Bar. Popular options include their non-alcoholic “kocktails” or in the traditional manner — poured into a bowl that’s best handled with two hands.
The first location, The Kava Bar, can be found at 4376 E. Speedway Blvd. and has been serving up its unique beverages since late 2019.
The owners of The Kava Bar, Whitney and Kevin Marx, met in Asheville, North Carolina — where they discovered their love for Kava. Whitney was born and raised in Tucson and was running a restaurant in Asheville before moving back to Tucson and opening up The Kava Bar.
The Kava Den will be located at 67 E. Pennington St. and the first location, The Kava Bar, is located at 4376 E. Speedway Blvd. For more information and to keep up on the latest, visit tucsonkavabar.com or follow The Kava Bar on Instagram.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
