Labor Day weekend is upon us. Celebrate the unofficial end of summer with pool parties, concerts, sports and delicious food. Enjoy the three day weekend and take time to relax. Stop by a farmers market to pick up the ingredients for a special meal or opt for a ready-made option.

Community Food Bank Farmers Markets

Curious about the what Community Food Bank actually looks like? Interested in getting a little exercise while supporting a good cause? Mark your calendars for September 17th at 8:00 a.m. for the annual Hunger Walk. The walk takes you through the onsite gardens and includes  a stop at The Big Chill, a 2700 square foot, zero degree freezer!

Santa Cruz River Farmers Market

100 S. Avenida del Convento – Thursday 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.

  • Cochise Family Farms has grown some delicious, juicy peaches, blackberries and raspberries. Seems like the perfect opportunity to bake a pie full of local, fresh produce.
  • Cafe Justo has one-pound bags of organic coffee grown by a coffee grower cooperative based in Chiapas, Mexico.  This vendor supports small-scale coffee producers and local non-profit Blessings from the Heart.
El Pueblo Mobile Market

El Rio Parking lot, Irvington Road and 6th Avenue – Monday 3:00  – 5:00 p.m

Community Food Bank Farm Stand

3003 S. Country Club Road – Tuesday 8:00 a.m – 12:00 p.m

  • Abundant Harvest Cooperative has some fresh, new produce this week! Stop by for  bell peppers, green chilis,  jujubes, fresh herbs, white pomegranates, and cantaloupes.

FoodInRoot

New market alert from FoodInRoot! Starting on September 21, the St. Philip’s Twilight Market will kickoff in coordination with the the walking/running group, Meet Me Wednesdays. This weekly market will run from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with an estimated 30 vendors participating.

Sycamore Park Twilight Market

East Sycamore Park Boulevard, First Friday of the Month, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

  • Global Fusion, purveyor of home baked goods, has whipped up some delicious peach cobbler, chocolate-peanut butter brownies and white chocolate-pecan brownies.
  • Crush Gourmet Raspados specializes in the crushed ice, premium ice cream and real fruit w/syrup frozen treat.  All the syrups are made from scratch and include flavors like strawberry, mango, coconut and pineapple. 
St. Philip’s Plaza Farmers Market

4280 N. Campbell Road, Sunday from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

  • Queen Civiche makes fresh shrimp ceviche for the market. Also, stop by for a bottle of the Organic Hibiscus Syrup. It was the star ingredient in the recent Salsa and Tequila Challenge that led this vendor to win Judge’s Choice for its Dusty’s Margarita!
  • Happy Hippie Kitchen has fresh rainbow wraps, zucchini noodles and chia seed pudding topped with berries for a healthy, fresh start to your week!

Heirloom Farmers Markets

Heirloom Farmers Markets is encouraging all of those in town for the weekend to visit the weekend markets for all of your grilling needs. Look for local beef, pork, chicken, or salmon. The farmers, ranchers and producers will all be on hand to answer any questions or provide inspiration for the best methods to make all that you pick up.

Rillito Park (4502 N. 1st Avenue) – Sunday from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Fermented Tea Company launched a brand new variety! Stop by to try OrangeNilla, an orange cream flavored kombucha. While you are there, pick up a bottle of Good Green, Cuatros Amigos and Prickly Pear to round out a four pack.
  • The Jojoba Beef Company: From the southwestern sonoran desert, this beef is 100% pure. Unlike some other ranches, the animals receive no antibiotics, or growth hormones.
Oro Valley (10901 N. Oracle Road) – Saturday 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • White Cane Sockeye Salmon sells frozen fillets of Alaskan Sockeye Salmon.  They are all completely boned and individually vacuum-sealed right after being caught in the beautiful Alaskan waters.
Trail Dust Town (6541 E. Tanque Verde Road) – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • San Rafael Valley Grass-Fed Beef treats all of its animals with love and respect. No antibiotics, no hormones, no feed lots – just lots of open space to roam and graze. Look for summer sausage, pork bacon, roasts and steaks.

José Contreras, chef and owner of @Ameliastucson, is headed to New York City to cook alongside chef Alam Méndez of Washington, D.C.‘s Apapacho Taqueria for a collaborative dinner at the James Beard Foundation’s Platform at Pier 57.

The Aug. 11 dinner will celebrate the culinary traditions of Sonora and Oaxaca through a multi course menu centered on heirloom corn, traditional masa, and coastal flavors. Guests will also enjoy a cocktail reception, Mijenta Tequila pairings, and a Q&A with both chefs. The event begins at 6:30 pm at @Pier57.nyc. Although El Conquistador licenses the Hilton brand, it’s owned and operated by a local company. The culinary team sources much of its meat and produce from Arizona.
