Back in 1877, Tucson was incorporated as a city, making it the oldest city in Arizona, and then more recently the Old Pueblo was recognized as the best place to live in the state. Tucson has also become quite the destination for travelers, hosting nearly seven million visitors a year, according to Visit Tucson.
I mean, it only makes sense being that our cultural traditions, arts community, and local food and beverage scene are top-notch. As a matter of fact, and you may already know this, Tucson proudly claimed the spotlight as the first UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in the U.S. in December 2015.
As a Tucsonan, there’s plenty to celebrate, and Pueblo Vida Brewing Company is throwing a party on 520 Day at its downtown taproom, 115 E. Broadway Blvd.
From 3 – 9 p.m. on Monday, May 20, it’s all things Tucson with their annual 520 IPA beer release, an all-day Happy Hour (3 – 9 p.m.), and limited edition 520 Day merch.

The 520 IPA — available to enjoy on draft and in cans to take home — is a hazy IPA made with Citra, El Dorado, and Mandarina Bavaria hops. Its citrusy notes are reminiscent of the bountiful citrus found in our beloved city.
“For the third annual year, we are raising our glasses to the unparalleled beauty and rich culture of our beloved desert city,” said Linette Antillon of Pueblo Vida Brewing. “Inspired by Tucson’s unifying area code (520), we’re taking the day to celebrate our home.”
In addition, the team is releasing Limited Edition 520 Day merchandise. Just like in previous years, they’ll have new stickers and a brand-new shirt designed by Ryan Trayte of Saywells Design (Ryan also designed the can art). The shirts were printed with the help of Why I Love Where I Live — a local business dedicated to celebrating Tucson all year round.
Buy any 520 Day merch, which includes shirts and cans, you’ll score a free sticker (while supplies last).

Last but not least, the taproom is bringing back a fan favorite: beer slushes. They’ll be serving two flavors to kickstart your summer here in Tucson.
Neat fact: May 20 also happens to be NASCAR Day, National Pick Strawberries Day, and heck, it’s even Cher’s birthday.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
