Who says you can’t have your pie and eat it too?
No one, because that phrase originally referenced cake. But, in this case, it means you can eat your pie or donate it to the 13th Annual Pie Party Sunday, May 1. It’s a fundraiser, so you can even feel good about it, too.
The Food Conspiracy Co-op and the YWCA of Southern Arizona have partnering for the event along with five participating local non-profits, including Camp Born This Way, Community Home Repair Projects of Arizona, Local First Arizona Foundation, Make Way for Books, and Tucson Roller Derby.
The pie contest is open to any home baker. Participants enter in one of four categories: fruit, cream, other, and vegan. Judging begins prior to the start of the party. Half of the event proceeds are awarded to the nonprofit with the most votes, while the baker that wins Best in Show will choose the nonprofit to receive the remaining proceeds. “The event attracts hundreds of people each year from all walks of life, and the pies are as diverse as the characters entering them,” said event organizer Josh Schachter. “Honey pie, Guatemalan chocolate pie, prickly pear lemon meringue pie, artichoke pie, Russian waffle pie. It’s like a gastronomic cross-section of the community itself.”
In addition to the pie mania, Arizona Public Media’s Dímelo: Stories of the Southwest, a micro-storytelling project exploring identity, community and the cultural geography of Tucson, will be on site to gather stories from the public.
Bluesy live music will be provided by Roman Barten-Sherman.
