The sights, the carnival ride frights, and the bites. The annual Pima County Fair is a combination of all of these things and it’s happening from Thursday, April 20 – Sunday, April 30.
There seems to be a theme at this year’s fair: Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Pizza. Throw some Hot Cheetos on it. Chicken Sandwich? Toss some Hot Cheetos on that, too.
So, when you’re not getting dazed by one of the dizzying fair rides, take a bite out of some of these festive meals that oughta keep your energy goin’ at 11300 S. Houghton Rd. Prepare for a journey through the following list of deep-fried delights, meat wrapped around other pieces of meat, and wonky meals that’ll tickle your tummy.
Here’s a list of what’s been revealed so far by the Pima County Fair:
Hot Cheeto Cheese & Pickle Pizza
“This interesting idea is a New York-style pizza with a white dill ranch pizza sauce. It’s topped with heaps of fresh mozzarella, loaded with thick-cut dill pickles, and then topped off with crunchy Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Guaranteed to change everything you thought you knew about pizza!”

Cotton Candy Taco
“Allow us to introduce the Cotton Candy Taco with a fluffy cotton candy shell, filled with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream, topped with assorted gummies, and then folded into a fun and sweet treat! Literally the ultimate sugar taco!”

Hot Cheeto Chicken
“Say hello to our little fiery friend: Hot Cheeto Chicken! Yummy double-fried chicken breast immediately dipped in rich melted cheddar cheese. After the cheese dip, the chicken is then rolled in crunchy Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and topped with crunchy dill pickles! Hot Cheeto Chicken is served on a stick or can be served on a toasted buttery brioche bun.”

Tucson Two-Step Ice Cream Cone
“Making its debut on the carnival midway is the new Tucson Two-Step Ice Cream Cone! A double cone filled with a chocolate swirl in one and the other a vanilla swirl. One dipped in chocolate and the other in caramel then rolled in caramel kettle corn!”

Funnel Cake
“We promised something sweet and more predictable. So here we are! Who can hate a funnel cake? Suck it Up Funnel Cakes will be offering up $3 funnel cakes during the fair happy hour, until 5 p.m., Monday, April 24 – Wednesday, April 26.”

Captain Chicken Sandwich
“This year we introduce the new Captain Chicken Sandwich! It’s a double fried extra crispy chicken breast drizzled with Honey Raspberry Glaze and topped with Cap’n Crunchberry cereal. The peanut buttery fruity cereal lends the perfect compliment to a great sandwich! If you like Chicken and waffles…. you’re going to love this fair food fix!”

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
