Tucson Tamale Market, the Oracle Road restaurant and market, has permanently closed after 12 years. Owner Frank Ruiz cited ongoing economic and financial pressures in an announcement shared across social media. The closure marks the end of a location that served the Tucson community through two ownerships, multiple rebrands, and years of challenges.
“After 12 incredible years, we have made the difficult decision to close Tucson Tamale Market effective immediately due to ongoing economic and financial pressures,” Ruiz wrote in a statement. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for 12 unforgettable years.”
A family recipe turned into a Tucson institution
The Oracle Road location traces its roots to Todd and Sherry Martin, who founded Tucson Tamale in 2008. That year, Todd left his executive position at a Fortune 500 company to make tamales full time. Sherry brought a family tradition rooted in her Mexican-American heritage, including a recipe passed down through generations in her family’s kitchen.
The Martins opened their first location on East Broadway on Nov. 21, 2008. Their Oracle Road spot followed as the brand grew. Over time, the couple expanded into a national presence, selling handmade tamales in thousands of grocery stores across the country.

As the manufacturing side of the business grew, the Martins shifted their focus toward national distribution. Earlier this spring, the brand had secured placement in Tucson-area Costco locations, including in-store sampling roadshows featuring the Green Chile Cheese tamale and two new products: Hatch Green Chile Breakfast Squares and Chorizo Breakfast Squares. The brand, which now operates under the name Tucson Foods, sells tamales in over 5,000 stores nationwide.
Growth and transition at Oracle Road
As the Martins’ wholesale and distribution business expanded, they decided to step back from the retail restaurant side. Frank Ruiz, a former general manager with the company, took over the Oracle Road location. He added “Market” to the name and stocked the space with take-home frozen tamales, Tucson Tamale salsas and tortillas, and locally made products including hot and spicy Mexican candy from Tucson-based Tanna’s Botannas.
Ruiz ran the Oracle Road address as an independent operator for the final two years of its 12-year run. He maintained the tamale-focused menu while building out the market side of the business. For many regulars, the spot remained a go-to for both a quick meal and locally sourced pantry finds.
The Oracle Road restaurant will not reopen. The Tucson Foods manufacturing and distribution brand continues separately.
