Cafe Poca Cosa is one of Tucson’s few destination restaurants.

The downtown, upscale Mexican eatery has received mentions by publications like Better Homes & Gardens, Gourmet Magazine, and The New York Times. Richard B. Woodward, writing for The Times, called it, “One place [Tucsonans] have a right to be proud of.” Cafe Poca Cosa frequently ranks in The Tucson Weekly’s annual Best of Tucson Rankings—in 2015, it won Best Downtown Restaurant.

Opened by chef and owner Sazana Davila in 1989 in a former hotel where the current Unisource building currently sits, the restaurant has consistently churned out destination-worthy Mexican cuisine to locals and visitors form all over the world.

While Cafe Poca Cosa focuses on regional Mexican cuisine made with fresh ingredients, it doesn’t have a set menu. Instead, the menu is printed on chalkboards and changed twice a day, and the servers read it to customers. Cafe Poca Cosa offers a range of meats and fish, and there’s always at least one vegetarian option. Recent customers gave rave reviews to tamales in carrot sauce, asada en salsa brava, and pollo picadillo. They offer an extensive tequila menu, and their margaritas are a customer favorite.

The restaurant’s decor reflects its unique spin on traditional Mexican cuisine. Chrome accents and ruby-red walls are interspersed with Mexican folk art, giving it a look that is at once glamorous and classic.
