10 Spots to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo 2017

10 Spots to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo 2017

May 3, 20176 min read

Cinco de Mayo lands on a Friday this year. Hopefully this means you won’t have to work so hard to avoid a hangover. But whether you’d like to spend this year indulging in a mass amount of tacos or drinking a fair amount of tequila, Tucson’s got it going on.

And while we’re at it, how well do you know the history of Cinco de Mayo? Hint: it’s not Mexico’s day of independence.

The holiday credits the victory of the Mexican army over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Cinco de Mayo also commemorates a day of hope that has evolved over the years into a celebration of Mexican heritage.

If that’s not reason to celebrate with tasty local cuisine and creative cocktails then I don’t know what is. So rather than taking a siesta, why not partake in a fiesta instead with one of these awesome Cinco de Mayo events.

More about Matt

At a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.

He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.

If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.

Between the pools, hot spring and cold plunge, water slide, yoga, live music, complimentary bike rentals, and their nostalgic “Summer Rewind” experience, there was always something to do. We never left the resort.

The highlight at their on-site restaurant, Epazote Kitchen & Cocktails, was the Pollo Con Rajas - perfectly cooked chicken over a rich creamed poblano, onion, and corn mestizaje. And if you’re at their Sundance Café for breakfast, get the pozole. It’s made from a family recipe that became such a guest favorite it earned a permanent spot on the menu.

Although El Conquistador licenses the Hilton brand, it’s owned and operated by a local company. The culinary team sources much of its meat and produce from Arizona.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or just looking for an incredible dinner with Catalina Mountain views, this spot is worth adding to your list. 🌵🌞
