Teresa’s Mosaic Café temporarily closes its doors after catching fire

Oct 12, 20221 min read

Teresa’s Mosaic Café, located near Silverbell Road and Ironwood Hill Drive, announced it’ll be temporarily closed for renovations after a fire broke out in the restaurant’s attic space.

According to the Tucson Fire Department, a fire alarm alerted them to the scene just before midnight. Right now, it’s hard to say what caused the flames, which created some pretty significant damage to the dining room, but they’ve got some fire investigators reviewing what could have happened.

The west side Mexican restaurant, which serves up Oaxacan and Sonoran dishes, has been around since 1984 and the family has been operating out of this location for more than 20 years now.

“Teresa’s Mosaic Café has been in business for nearly 40 years, and spent the last 25 years at this location,” Alfonso and Teresa Matias shared online. “We are working to reopen as soon as possible. The Matias Family thanks you for your understanding and continued support. We look forward to you dining with us in the future.”

The long-standing family restaurant showcases some of the family’s favorite recipes including their huevos rancheros. Speaking of which, the popular dish was even featured in an episode of “Throwdown with Bobby Flay.”

Luckily, no injuries came from the fire and all of us here at Tucson Foodie wish them a speedy renovation.

Teresa’s Mosaic Café is located at 2456 N. Silver Mosaic Dr. For more information and to keep up with any updates on the reopening of the dining room, visit teresasmosaic.com.

More about Matt

At a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.

He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.

If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.

@Dedicatedgf is for sale, but it’s not closing. The Midtown bakery at 4500 E. Speedway Blvd. will continue normal operations into 2027 and is accepting holiday orders.

Owner Jennifer Kinkade announced the listing on Instagram, explaining that rising operating costs and accumulated debt have made it difficult to sustain the business, despite steadily increasing year-over-year sales since 2020. The sale includes the business, recipes, lease and equipment. Kinkade is also open to a partnership or angel investor. The buyer would not assume the bakery’s existing debt.

Dedicated offers an entirely gluten-free facility with vegan and dairy-free options, including pastries, bread, cookies, pies and custom cakes.

Interested buyers can email jen@dedicatedgf.com. Customers can continue placing holiday orders as usual.
