Brick Box Brewery to close downtown Nov. 29

Oct 27, 20261 min read

Brick Box Brewery will close its doors on Nov. 29. The brewery announced the closure via social media Tuesday morning. The taproom sits at 220 E. Broadway Blvd. in downtown Tucson, in the former Thunder Canyon Brewery space.

"We want to thank all of you that have contributed and shared the space with us over the years," the brewery wrote. The post invites customers to visit over the next month for one last round. It closes with a short message: "We love you Tucson."

A final month of visits

Brick Box did not share a reason for the closure. The post also did not say what will happen to the space or to upcoming events. However, the October event calendar remains posted:

Brick Box typically opens 4 p.m.-midnight on Wednesdays through Fridays and noon-midnight on Saturdays and Sundays. Check the brewery's Instagram for any changes to hours during its final weeks.

From Thunder Canyon to Brick Box

Thunder Canyon Brewery operated at the Broadway location for 27 years before changing hands in 2024. James Owens, the former Thunder Canyon general manager, and Michael Nixon, the former head brewer, relaunched it as Brick Box Brewery with partner Steve Tracy. Tucson Foodie covered the new name and ownership in April 2024. A grand opening celebration followed on May 1 of that year.

Brick Box built on the space's role as a gathering spot. The taproom hosted live music, rotating local art, and food pop-ups. It also rented its large room for weddings and private events. Meanwhile, its in-house root beer earned praise as a nonalcoholic option.

Where to find local beer

Tucson still has several taprooms for craft beer fans. Browse Tucson Foodie's guide to local breweries to find your next stop.

Grant Road construction near Alvernon Way is nearing its end. Crews started in May 2024 and expect to finish October 2026. The finished road will have six lanes, landscaped medians, and buffered bike lanes.

Meanwhile, neighborhood restaurants have kept serving customers through lane shifts and driveway limits. Drivers who avoided the area may have skipped a few favorites. Now that the finish line is in sight, it is a good time to return. Here are four restaurants worth a visit.
