OPENING: Postino WineCafé coming to midtown spring 2020

Jun 4, 20192 min read

Another Phoenix-based eatery is making its way to Tucson.

With plans to open in spring of 2020, Postino WineCafé will open at the southeast corner of Grant Rd. & Tucson Blvd. (across the street from Culinary Dropout) at 2500 E. Grant Rd. According to the press release, Postino WineCafe will be “housed inside a striking, mid-century modern-inspired mixed-used development now under construction.”

According to Postino CEO Lauren Bailey, the brand has partnered with a fourth-generation Tucsonan to bring Postino to Tucson.

“Postino has always been focused on serving our surrounding community and really becoming a part of the fabric of a neighborhood,” Bailey says. “So while we looked at dozens of potential sites over the years, it wasn’t until we walked this site with [developer] Brian Frakes and explored the amazing neighborhood, including local favorite like Dante’s Fire and Kingfisher, that we knew we’d found the perfect home for Postino in Tucson.”

Common Bond Development Group’s Frakes, who also transformed Grant Road Lumberyard into Fox Restaurant Concept’s Culinary Dropout.

“My grandparents lived just down the street, so I’ve always known this area as home to a unique mix of restaurants and retail, surrounded by these amazing historic adobe ranch-style homes,” said Frakes. “Close to campus, and tucked between downtown Tucson and the northern foothills, it’s the geographic center of Tucson.”

Postino will occupy a sleek, low-slung 4,000 square foot space, inspired by “Tucson’s earliest ranch-style adobe homes, designed in the 1930s by Swiss-born architect, Josias Joesler.” Architectural highlights include a series of floor-to-ceiling windows and roll-up windows, walls all artfully protected by large overhangs, and an outdoor patio tucked behind a living wall of plant vines that extends right up and over the roof.

Postino plans to serve lunch and dinner daily, along with “farm-fresh brunch” featuring live music from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the weekends. Menu items include bruschetta, scratch-made soups, salads, and panini sandwiches.

Guests can expect a variety of Arizona and Tucson craft brews along with an ever-changing selection of wines, including more than 30 wines by the glass.

@Seiscantina has permanently closed its Joesler Village location at 1765 E. River Rd., the Muñoz family announced today.

Three Seis Kitchen locations remain open at Tanque Verde Road, Oro Valley, and Mercado San Agustín. The family says guests can still find their favorite dishes and familiar faces at the remaining locations.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share some bittersweet news. After much reflection, we have made the difficult decision to permanently close our Joesler Village newly rebranded Cantina Location. Saying goodbye to the regular guests who became faces we looked forward to seeing every week, we are truly sorry that we cannot continue serving you here. You turned a simple dining room into a vibrant community gathering place, and for that, we will be forever grateful.”

On a hierarchical tier list of comfort food, mac and cheese ranks among the top. An ideal mac and cheese blends rich creaminess with a kiss of crunch. A velvety cheese sauce coats every noodle without being lumpy or gloppy. Chefs use blend of artisanal cheeses to create depth and sharpness. Roasted poblano, salty cured meat, and crunchy breadcrumbs add texture and complexity without overwhelming the dish. The right pasta shape, such as cavatappi or shells, helps the sauce adhere better than standard elbow macaroni and offers a more toothsome bite.

In this list, we highlight some of the spots with stand-out mac and cheese in Tucson. Share your favorites with us in the comments.🧀
