Update: Grand opening date has been moved from Saturday, March 29 to Sunday, March 30.
Last summer, Robert’s Restaurant closed its doors at 3301 E. Grant Rd., opening up the opportunity for a local meat market and restaurant, Rancheros Carniceria, to move in.
Owner Luis Lopez purchased the building on Grant Road and immediately began remodeling. After a few months of interior demolition and restructuring, Rancheros Carniceria is ready to officially open on Sunday, March 30.
One-Stop Shop
Rancheros sells premium meats, fresh cuts, and ready-to-cook meals, but also serves tacos, burros, menudo, housemade tortillas to-go, freshly-made salsas, tamales, and produce like tomatoes, jalapeños, and other veggies to take home.
Tacos can be ordered individually with options like chicken, asada, pork chicharron, beef chiccharron, al pastor, chile colorado, carnitas, and birria. If you’re aiming for a heartier meal, toss any of those proteins in a burro or order them as a combination plate equipped with beans and rice.
If you’d rather prep your meals at home, one of Rancheros’ most popular items is carne asada, which comes marinated and ready for the grill. They also offer pollo asado, al pastor, chorizo, beef ribs, pork chops, thin-cut steaks, and ground beef, to list a few.
How it All Began
Rancheros Carniceria started with a simple foundation of family, tradition, and a deep respect for the craft. Lopez began learning the art of butchery when he was just 13 years old, a skill passed down through generations. His grandfather was a ranchero, his father worked in the meat industry, and those early lessons stuck with him.
Now, as Rancheros expands across Arizona, it’s still grounded in the same values: quality meats, honest service, and a community-first mindset.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
