Apr 20, 20262 min read

The inaugural Sonoran Dog Showdown at the Mercado District premieres on May 2 with a competitive twist, hosted by the Mercado District and Rollies West. The event invites guests to sample creations from six local vendors and vote for their favorite. Organizers will host the event from 6-10 p.m. at the MSA Annex, 267 S. Avenida del Convento.

Guests can expect a high-energy evening that blends Tucson’s signature street food with live entertainment. Organizers aim to crown the best Sonoran dog in town while celebrating the city’s food culture.

Sonoran Dog Showdown Tucson highlights local chefs

The Sonoran Dog Showdown Tucson event will feature six participating restaurants competing for the top prize. Each vendor will serve half-dog portions, which allows guests to sample a range of styles. Attendees will cast votes to help determine the winner.

Participating vendors include:

  • Rollies West
  • Gordo Dogs
  • Hotdogs 501
  • Whatadogo
  • At Ease Cookz
  • One mystery spot

The winning chef will take home a golden hot dog necklace, a playful nod to Tucson’s iconic dish. The competition format encourages creativity while keeping the focus on flavor.

Tickets and what to expect

General admission costs $30 and includes six half-dog bites and two pints of Mexican lager. Meanwhile, a non-alcoholic ticket option costs $20 and excludes beer. Children 12 and under can attend for free.

Tucson Foodie Insiders and Tucson Doobie members can receive a $5 discount on tickets. Guests will also receive one vote to support their favorite vendor.

Entertainment and atmosphere

In addition to the food competition, the event will feature live entertainment throughout the evening. DJ HumbleLianess will provide music, setting the tone for a lively crowd. Meanwhile, Throwback Era Wrestling will host live luchador matches from 8-9 p.m.

The event will also include a MiniBar takeover by ’81 Barber’s The Side Bar. This addition expands beverage options and enhances the social atmosphere.

A celebration of Tucson’s signature dish

The Sonoran dog remains one of Tucson’s most beloved street foods. This event highlights the dish’s versatility while showcasing local talent. Each vendor brings a distinct approach, which gives guests a broad tasting experience.
