‘The Landing’ brings its surf & turf cuisine to Oro Valley

Aug 9, 20211 min read

A familiar “surf and turf” menu has dropped anchor at its new Oro Valley location.

After a lot of preparation and patience, Fini’s Landing recently announced the opening of its sister restaurant — The Landing — at 8195 N. Oracle Rd.

The Landing moved into the location that previously housed Chuy’s Mesquite Broiler. The owners, Doug Finical and Scott Mencke, had been working on the new spot since last spring, which is when they began construction on the interior.

Finical and Mencke, who have been friends since their University of Arizona days, opened Fini’s Landing in Tucson back in 2012. If you’ve been to the original location at 5689 N. Swan Rd. chances are you’ve gobbled up some of their fish tacos, burgers, spicy chicken wings, or bowls — expect the same goodness here.

The Landing is open from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. daily with a Happy Hour on weekdays.

At the moment, you can get a dollar off draft beer and domestic bottles, well cocktails, and all of their wine selection from 2 – 6 p.m. Additionally, they have $3 margaritas during Happy Hour, too.

More about Matt

At a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.

He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.

If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.

Anne Rysdale built @sheltercocktaillounge in 1961 with concrete walls, lava rock, and Cold War nerves. Today, owners Pam Santangelo and Kevin Breutzmann keep the Tucson bar exactly as regulars remember it. Inside, martinis share space with JFK memorabilia, a vintage atomic chandelier, and a suit of armor named Charlie. “Tucson is changing so much, but this has stayed the same. It’s a time capsule,” Santangelo said.
