This Week At The Farmers Market: Apricots, Sweet Potatoes, Blackberry Habañero Jam

As the school year winds down and summer plans begin to take shape, the markets are in full swing. Whether you are planning a graduation party or a family backyard BBQ, our city’s farmers markets are full of all the products you’ll need to make everyone happy.

Community Food Bank

Santa Cruz River & Community Food Bank Farm Stand

This week marks the beginning of the Monday Market season for the Community Food Bank. The El Pueblo Mobile Market is located at 6th and Irvington in the El Rio Clinic parking lot and runs from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. It is similar to the Tuesday market with items exclusively from the Abundant Harvest Cooperative Table. Be sure to visit this location, it only runs until October.

Santa Cruz River Farmer’s Market at Mercado San Agustin – Thursday 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.
  • Double Check Ranch has locally raised, grass-fed lamb, poultry and beef for sale. Their mission is to produce humane and sustainable beef while holistically managing their land.
  • Maggie’s Farm will be at the market with its fresh, locally grown produce for purchase. But don’t worry; you don’t have to work for them
Community Food Bank Farmers Market, 3003 S. Country Club Road – Tuesday 8:00 a.m – 12:00 p.m.
  • The local farmers participating this week in the Abundant Harvest Cooperative have fresh cut herbs, lettuce heads, onions, sweet potatoes and fresh eggs for you to enjoy.

Food in Root

Food in Root is continuing to work on ensuring their new markets grow while allowing the established markets to flourish. The ultimate goal at every location is to bring fresher and better tasting food to our community, while having a little fun as well.

St. Philip’s Plaza Classic Farmers Market, 4280 N. Campbell Ave. –  Sunday 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Every week Spiritual Gangsta Yoga and Live Love Yoga host a class in the main courtyard from 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. This week, the class will be a fundraiser for Connected Warriors. Suggested donation is $10-$25.
  • Sleeping Frogs Farms are working on hard on its spring harvest. Check out this vendor for apricots, turnips, radishes, arugula and leeks.
Northwest Farmers Market, 6200 N. La Cholla – First and Third Tuesday of every month from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Fiamme Pizza Napoletana will be making pizzas in its 800-degree wood burning oven, while featuring pizza acrobatics and tossing shows.
  • Hand Picked Produce has a great selection of organic, pesticide free fruit and vegetables. You can also find blackberry habanero jam and local honey at their stand.

Heirloom Farmers Market

Rillito Park, Oro Valley & Trail Dust Town

Sign up this week for a CSA share with local farmers at all three of the Heirloom Farmers Market locations. The CSA (community supported agriculture) is a great way to establish a partnership with farmers in the area and ensure you receive a share of the fruit and vegetables being harvested. Think of it as a safe, sustainable subscription. For specifics on participating farms and locations, check out the new Heirloom Market website. The CSA shares are available until May 29th.

Rillito Park Farmers Market, 4502 N. 1st Avenue – Sunday from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Double Your Dollar$ Farm Bucks Program is back at this location. With the support of Wholesome Wave, anyone with a SNAP car will receive an extra $20 worth of fruits and vegetables for free. Visit the Market Info booth for more information.
  • Zamudio Eggs specializes in cage free, farm fresh eggs and will be on hand with plenty of eggs to get you through your week! Come pickup a dozen or two.
Oro Valley, 10901 N. Oracle Road – Saturday 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • This is the last 2nd Saturday market until October. In addition to the usual vendors, enjoy live music, an artisan fair and demonstrations by Heritage Garden.
  • Desert Treasures Orange Groves has a variety of local citrus grown in Tucson’s only remaining operating orange and date grove.
Trail Dust Town, 6541 E. Tanque Verde Road – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • My Rawesome Foods features a variety of freshly made, raw, vegan, gluten-free, non-GMP, superfood snacks. Check out the Nacho Taco Crackers and the Tangy Tahini Kale Chips for a unique, organic and healthy snack.

José Contreras, chef and owner of @Ameliastucson, is headed to New York City to cook alongside chef Alam Méndez of Washington, D.C.‘s Apapacho Taqueria for a collaborative dinner at the James Beard Foundation’s Platform at Pier 57.

The Aug. 11 dinner will celebrate the culinary traditions of Sonora and Oaxaca through a multi course menu centered on heirloom corn, traditional masa, and coastal flavors. Guests will also enjoy a cocktail reception, Mijenta Tequila pairings, and a Q&A with both chefs. The event begins at 6:30 pm at @Pier57.nyc.
