This Week at the Farmers Market: Okra, Meyer Lemonade, Basil & Tomatoes

Hold on to the last of the fleeting summer months by visiting the local markets and celebrating the fresh produce only available in the warm weather and heavy rain season. Get to market early to grab the best fruit and vegetables. Don’t forget to bring your own tote bag and drink lots of water.

Community Food Bank Farmers Markets

The Community Food Bank hosts a project to cultivate the next crop of farmers market vendors in local elementary schools. The Farm to Child program works with children, parents and teachers to provide training on composting, hen raising, and aquaponics to support container and in-ground gardening. This partnership inspires future generations of healthy eaters, farmers and food justice advocates to improve the community and help to make one that is hunger-free.

Santa Cruz River Farmers Market

100 S. Avenida del Convento – Thursday 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.

  • High Energy Agriculture brings a variety of summer squash, including zucchini, magda, cocozelle, and yellow crookneck. Also, check out the several kinds of probiotic fermented veggies.
  • Pure Joy Planet Culinary School joins the market to share a food demo on raw food using the highest quality immersive learning experience.
El Pueblo Mobile Market

  • Abundant Harvest Cooperative’s bounty this week will include onions, garlic, potatoes, chiles, figs, squash, beets and nectarines.

Plaza Palomino Saturday Mercardo

  • Hand Picked Produce has okra, peaches, zucchini, plums and tomatoes to add a fresh flavor to your meals and snacks.
  • The Ginger Bread Lady specializes in savory loaves of sandwich bread in flavors like Everything French Twist, Cranberry White and Honey Whole Wheat. If you are looking for something a little sweeter, try the Banana or Cinnamon Streusel.
St. Philip’s Plaza Farmers Market

4280 N. Campbell Road, Sunday from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

  • Saucy Lips Food shares its popular line of dairy, soy and gluten free sauces with a kick. Check out the jalapeño and green apple sauce for something a little special this week.
  • Queen Ceviche will have fresh shrimp ceviche and salsas. Look for fresh lemonade or limeade each week as well. With flavors like basil limeade, hibiscus lemonade and cranberry and meyer lemonade, your thirst is sure to be quenched.

Heirloom Farmers Markets

Heirloom Farmers Markets is honoring the taste of summer this week with the Tomato Basil Festival on Saturday in Oro Valley and Sunday at Rillito Park. Enjoy artisan breads, chilled gazpacho, heirloom tomatoes, tomato jams, roasted tomatoes, basil pasta and lasagna. Visit the market info booth for special recipes and vendor specials.

Rillito Park (4502 N. 1st Avenue) – Sunday from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Aravaipa Creekside Growers creates a sustainable diversified farm, specializing in mushroom compost and rainwater harvesting. Look to this vendor for delicious mushroom varieties as well as seasonal vegetables and flowers.
Oro Valley (10901 N. Oracle Road) – Saturday 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Sunset Cove Growers makes their own salad blends using local, organic and fresh produce. Create a delicious salad, starting with the most important green leafy part at this vendor’s stand.
Trail Dust Town (6541 E. Tanque Verde Road) – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Southwest Bee Supply is known for its all natural Arizona Mesquite Honey and Desert Wildflower Honey. With over 100 honeybee colonies on properties across Southern Arizona, don’t stop at a simple honey jar. Check out the honeycomb, creamed honey, bee pollen and beekeeping supplies as well.
