Tucson restaurants and chefs are no stranger to the national and global television audience, and the latest local business to land on the screen is Charro Steak & Del Rey.
The downtown Si Charro! restaurant concept will be featured on the Discovery+ premiere episode of “Taste of the Border” on Cinco de Mayo, Thursday, May 5.
The new show follows the acclaimed chef Claudia Sandoval as she goes on excellent journeys along the U.S.-Mexico border. She makes it a point to stop by diverse culinary destinations that are often-overlooked border towns, stretching from their hometown of San Diego, California to South Padre Island, Texas.
Sandoval grew up along the border herself, making her a great fit to highlight the yummy and surprising food found in the region. Also, she seeks out “how the food from each town showcases a blending of flavors and cultures from the U.S. and Mexico, as well as other unexpected influences.”
During the visit to Tucson and inside downtown’s Charro Steak & Del Rey, Claudia tackled quite a few signature dishes presented by executive chef Gary Hickey — things like Charro Escargot, the Lobster Tamalada, and the Charro Burger and fries.
As you may know, Charro Steak & Del Rey is just one of the many Si Charro! restaurants here in Tucson. CEO Ray Flores is excited about being a part of the premiere on Discovery+.

“We welcome any chance we can to showcase the first U.S. City of Gastronomy,” said Flores. “For those of us who live here and enjoy local cuisine, we know how lucky we are to have access to some of the best food anywhere. It’s nice to get that message out to the rest of the world.
