By Tucson Foodie

Acclaimed James Beard Award-winning baker, Don Guerra, is venturing into the Phoenix market by opening a satellite bakery in Gilbert. This new location will operate one day a week, offering customers the opportunity to indulge in the oh-so-popular Barrio Bread.

A Taste of Tucson in Gilbert

Guerra has carefully planned his expansion into the Phoenix market. In collaboration with Hayden Flour Mills’ father-daughter owners, Jeff and Emma Zimmerman, Guerra has spent the past 18 months developing his satellite bakery idea.

The satellite bakery will be located at Hayden Flour Mills’ new facility at 932 N. Colorado St. in Gilbert. Every Tuesday, customers will have the chance to order and pick up their favorite loaves of Barrio Bread. With the capacity to bake up to 300 loaves each week, the aroma of fresh bread will surely captivate the locals of Gilbert.

Despite his expansion into Phoenix, Guerra wants to assure his loyal customers in Tucson that he has no plans to leave the market that has embraced Barrio Bread since its humble beginnings in his Tucson garage in 2009. The success and support from the Tucson community have been paramount in shaping the Barrio Bread legacy.

A Journey Rooted in Tradition

For Don Guerra, the collaboration with the Zimmerman family is an exciting venture that goes beyond bread.

The Zimmermans, known for supplying Guerra with heritage and native grains, have been an integral part of Barrio Bread’s success. The satellite bakery’s location next to Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company also aligns with Guerra’s grains philosophy.

In fact, the brewery is teaming up with Guerra to create a unique beer that is set to debut in September.

Expansion of the Barrio Bread Family

Alongside the renowned bread, the Gilbert bakery will also introduce Barrio Bagels to its product line. These delectable bagels, a joint effort between Guerra and Neal Borenstein’s popular Phoenix bagel bakery, Chompie’s, will be baked in Phoenix and shipped to the Tucson bakery. Customers can expect these mouthwatering bagels to be available in Tucson this month.

With this exciting expansion, Don Guerra takes another step toward bringing the unmatched experience of Barrio Bread to a wider audience, while staying true to his roots and continuing the legacy that began in his garage.

In Tucson, Barrio Bread is located at 18 S. Eastbourne Ave. In September, the satellite location will be open on Tuesdays at 932 N. Colorado St. For more information, visit barriobread.com.
