For some, the year seemed to fly by faster than a toupee in a hurricane.
The holidays are in full swing here in Tucson with dinner reservations filling up fast, holiday cocktails warming bellies, and some local businesses gearin’ up to open their doors on Christmas day. Plus, a lot of things are limited around this time of year and that includes holiday brews.
Here’s a list of a few festive beers and ciders you ought to try before they’re gone (some are available all year).
Grab a pint of Nolan’s Porter at the oldest brewery in town. First brewed in 1994 to commemorate the birth of the Brewmaster’s son, the beer is dark, rich, complex, and full of flavor — delivering a palate of roasted malt flavor with a touch of chocolate on the finish.
Tucson’s only local cidery has two warm ciders on hand at the Fourth Avenue taproom. Try one or all of their cider slushies: Apple, Pumpkin Pie, and/or Cherry Vanilla. They’ll make you feel a little goofy post-consumption.
Get over to the east side brewery pronto for an Elf Tears stour! It’s a “delightful peppermint marshmallow stout served with whipped cream and a candy cane.” Also, there’s a limited quantity, so don’t delay — act now!
Borderlands Brewing is currently pouring “cake in a glass” with its German Chocolate Cake Porter. This beer “packs all the chocolatey, coconutty goodness of your grandma’s secret recipe, minus the awkward family gatherings.”
The Marana brewery currently has its Pumpkin Pie on tap — it’s a red/amber brew waiting to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. ”
“We love pumpkin pie so much that we found a way to infuse a pumpkin pie recipe into a beer! Malty flavors and aromas of toasted bread and caramel pair perfectly with pumpkin pie giving it a fresh baked aroma and flavor for the Fall & Winter seasons. Try it with whipped cream on top, cheers!”
On Saturday, December 21, Crooked Tooth is releasing its brand-new Solstice Black IPA.
“Upon this Winter Solstice, we invite you to join us Saturday, the 21st, in offerings of celebration, community, and intention setting as we near the end of the year upon the darkest night of Winter.”
Earlier this month, author Monte Hill released her new novel “Catbird Winter” and MotoSonora unveiled its new tropical rye IPA with the same name. During the beer release/book release party, proceeds benefitted the ongoing flood relief efforts in North Carolina. “Great book, great beer, and great cause? What isn’t to like?”
Celebrate the arrival of winter in the desert with Pueblo Vida’s newest release of Foraged. “This unique hazy IPA gets a little something extra added each time it is brewed. This batch features blood orange juice, adding a splash of sweet citrus to the white peach hop flavor.”
Tucson’s newest brewery recently released Hibernate — an old-school West Coast IPQ “made for our chilly Arizona winter.” It’s brewed with a base of pale and crystal malts and hopped at their “highest rate yet with whole cone Cascade, Chinook, and Krush cryo. New school hoppiness meets old school nostalgia at 6.7%”
