Downtown Tucson To Get Grocery Store

Downtown Tucson To Get Grocery Store

Apr 17, 20141 min read

One of the major complaints I hear most from people living in Downtown Tucson is the lack of a grocery store. That should all change come December when Paul Cisek and Ron Abbott, the former and current owners of Rincon Market – which has been closed since a July 2013 fire – plan to open Johnny Gibson’s Downtown Market. It will be the first time in over 40 years that downtown has seen a full service grocery store.

What you need to know:

  • 6,000 square foot space in former Beowulf Theatre will become Johnny Gibson’s Downtown Market at 11 S. 6th Ave
  • First full service market downtown since 1972
  • Will cost owners $800k to $1m to build out
  • Market will include a salad bar, cafe, bakery, fresh fish, and groceries
  • Possible partnership with Basha’s
  • Will include bicycle delivery service
  • Name is a homage to Tucson icon, Johnny Gibson

For more info, or to keep up with their progress, follow Johnny Gibson’s Downtown Market on Facebook.

Cafe Francais, the French bakery known for its scratch-made croissants and kouign-amann, is closing for good. Owners Noelle and Daniel Martinez announced the closure on Instagram Wednesday afternoon, ending a seven-year run that began on Tucson’s east side.

“Thank you, Tucson, for one hell of a crazy, amazing, and sometimes terrible 7-year ride. We’ve truly loved it all, the good, the bad, and the difficult.”
