New Rincon Market To Feature Pizza, Sushi, Beer & Wine Bar

Jun 24, 20141 min read

After an extensive restoration following an electrical fire nearly a year ago, Rincon Market is finally set to open Monday, June 30th. Customers will be greeted with more than just a new look.

New Rincon Market Almost Complete
New ductwork and concrete floors.

According to Rincon Market’s Kelly Abbott, who owns the 85-year-old grocery store with her husband Mark, Rincon will be not only be keeping the eclectic favorites that have made it a daily destination for thousands of Tucsonans, but they’ll be adding pizza ovens, a full-on sushi bar with dedicated chef, and a beer and wine bar.

Shoppers will also see a greater selection of meats, cheeses and fresh produce through a new partnership with former Rincon Market owner Paul Cisek, who currently runs the Tubac Market and Downtown Tucson’s forthcoming Johnny Gibson Downtown Market. “We’re raising the bar on that end,” Abbott said. “We figured we had to be better with the grocery part of the market.”

Abbott says that for now, the pizza may be geared more towards students and others later in the evening, and the sushi may take a little longer to get rolling.

IOU Sushi III has closed. The all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant on North Oracle Road announced the news on Facebook after about 10 years in Tucson. “This is the hardest post I’ve had to write,” the owners said. The post continued, “we have met some great friends who have become family to us.” Tucson Foodie first visited the restaurant in 2017, when it operated as IOU Sushi IV.

Anne Rysdale built @sheltercocktaillounge in 1961 with concrete walls, lava rock, and Cold War nerves. Today, owners Pam Santangelo and Kevin Breutzmann keep the Tucson bar exactly as regulars remember it. Inside, martinis share space with JFK memorabilia, a vintage atomic chandelier, and a suit of armor named Charlie. “Tucson is changing so much, but this has stayed the same. It’s a time capsule,” Santangelo said.
