Barro’s Pizza, a family-owned and operated pizzeria based out of Phoenix (with two locations in Tucson), awarded $10,000 today to 19-year-old Carlos Borunda as the 2022 Arizona Barro’s Pizza/Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway winner.

Back in September 2022, submissions were open for all Arizona students and the prize money is meant to help pay for college tuition or any related educational expenses.
Borunda currently works as a Marketing Assistant at Simply Bookkeeping & Taxes. He had taken some time off of school to pick up a second job and then learned about Barro’s Pizza contest. As a result of winning the $10,000, he will now be able to go back to school at Pima Community College where he is studying Marketing and Computer Information Systems.
“I can’t believe I won,” said Borunda, who was just one of the over 13,000 entries in this year’s giveaway. “I am looking forward to going back to school as hopefully, this will allow me to get the resources and education I need to further my knowledge in web development. After gaining experience in marketing, I’ve decided after college, I would like to open a digital marketing agency in Tucson.”
With more than 40 years in business, Barro’s Pizza has over 45 restaurants now throughout Arizona. Co-owner, Bruce Barro, shared that the Barro family prides itself on finding ways to support and improve the communities they serve.
“We love being able to help students find their passion and offer hope for a bright future,” said Barro. “Just knowing we are helping young adults get an education and pursue a career is what it’s all about for us.”
The Barro’s/Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway has awarded $95,000 to students in Arizona since 2012. Submissions were open to all Arizona residents 18 years or older and a winner was chosen at random.
Barro’s Pizza is located at 410 N. Wilmot Rd. and 5884 Arizona Pavilions Dr. To keep up with the latest on the next giveaway and all things Barro’s Pizza, visit barrospizza.com.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
