‘Tis the season to find out who makes the meanest tamales.
The 12th Annual Tucson Tamal & Heritage Festival at the AVA Amphitheater at Casino Del Sol will be held from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday, December 3.
The competition will take place from noon – 2 p.m. Competitors will face off in four categories: traditional red, green corn, gourmet, and sweet. Cash prizes are awarded for first through third place in each category, but there will be only one victor for the all-around tamale prize.
Even though it’s last minute, the competition is still open to competitors. To participate against 2015 tamale titleholder Ivonne Rosas, apply on the event page.
The event is free to enter and features farmers market vendors with tomales, tacos, fry bread, desserts, aguas frescas, roasted corn, and more.
Additional stands will feature artisan goods such as art, jewelry, and bead work.
Live entertainment will be provided by Tejano and mariachi bands, DJs, Azteca, and Folklorico dancers.
