BirdieVee Coffee opened inside the lobby of 5151 E. Broadway Tower, a building marking its 50th anniversary. Co-owners Shannon Fina and Vanessa Rodriguez, longtime friends who attended Sahuaro High School, reconnected after years in separate careers to launch the concept together. The shop operates 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday, with dedicated parking on the south-facing parking deck. The menu covers signature coffees, cold brew, tea, smoothies, and dirty sodas. For food, the shop offers pastries, bagels, fresh-baked cookies, popcorn, and candy. BirdieVee sources its coffee beans from Tucson-based Yellow Brick Coffee, and baked goods come from Desert in Bloom Bakes in Sahuarita.

José Contreras, chef and owner of @Ameliastucson, is headed to New York City to cook alongside chef Alam Méndez of Washington, D.C.‘s Apapacho Taqueria for a collaborative dinner at the James Beard Foundation’s Platform at Pier 57. The Aug. 11 dinner will celebrate the culinary traditions of Sonora and Oaxaca through a multi course menu centered on heirloom corn, traditional masa, and coastal flavors. Guests will also enjoy a cocktail reception, Mijenta Tequila pairings, and a Q&A with both chefs. The event begins at 6:30 pm at @Pier57.nyc.
