Local wine and cheese specialty store, Blu: A Wine & Cheese Stop will hold a second series of wine and cheese pairing classes at their Mercado San Agustin location. Here is the full schedule:

  • Friday, September 19: US Wine & Cheese
  • Friday, September 26: Italian Wine & Cheese
  • Friday, October 3: French Wine & Cheese
  • Friday, October 10: Spanish Wine & Cheese

Blu discovered a strong demand for learning to pair wine and cheese after the success of their first series of classes, Wine & Cheese Summer Camp in August.

“Over the summer, through our Wine & Cheese Summer Camp, we found that people were really curious and wanting to learn about pairing wine and cheese,” says Tana Fryer, shop owner and cheesemonger-in-chief. “The classes sold out quickly and everyone asked for more, ”

Sessions will be taught by Fryer; Holly Holton, manager of Blu’s location inside Alfonso’s; Melissa Hall, Blu’s resident wine expert; and Alicynn Fink, who earned a Master’s in Food, Culture and Communication from the Universita di Scienze Gastronomiche.

“We are having so much fun bringing the Blu experience to Tucson,” says Fryer. “Through these classes, our cheesemongers are able to tell the cheese makers’ story as well as offer tastes from each producer.”

Attendees can pick and choose sessions or attend all four. The cost of each session is $20, which includes wine and cheese, plus a $10 rebate on any retail purchase. Attendees to all four sessions will also receive a 15% discount on dining during their visit.

Classes will be held at Blu’s Mercado San Agustin location.

Anne Rysdale built @sheltercocktaillounge in 1961 with concrete walls, lava rock, and Cold War nerves. Today, owners Pam Santangelo and Kevin Breutzmann keep the Tucson bar exactly as regulars remember it. Inside, martinis share space with JFK memorabilia, a vintage atomic chandelier, and a suit of armor named Charlie. “Tucson is changing so much, but this has stayed the same. It’s a time capsule,” Santangelo said.
