'Dinner In The Sky' Gives New Meaning To Extravagant Dining

'Dinner In The Sky' Gives New Meaning To Extravagant Dining

May 6, 20162 min read
Dinner In The Sky doesn't mean eating stale peanuts on a cramped airplane. It's an hour-long dinner featuring a three or four-course meal prepared by a local chef. It's a typical dining experience — except it's in the sky. The original concept was created by David Ghysels and Steven Kerkhofs. Ghysels, founder of marketing agency Hakuna Matata, needed a new way to promote a local French restaurant. Kerkhofs, owner of The Fun Group — an entertainment company specializing in bungee jumping and other extreme attractions — had always thought about dangling a table in the sky. And so, in 2007, with the help of a giant crane, the two Belgian entrepreneurs suspended a dinner table 180 feet above the ground. Dinner In The Sky has now entertained over 1000 people in 40 countries. The same company also offers Marriage In The Sky and Meetings In The Sky.

Now imagine a Tucson-based Dinner In The Sky. Which of our local chefs would be up for the challenge? Perhaps Chef Janos Wilder of DOWNTOWN Kitchen + Cocktails, Chef Maria Mazon of BOCA Tacos y Tequila, or Danny Perez of JW Marriott's Signature Grill? Past events have been held in view of iconic locations including the Eiffel Tower, the Dubai Marina, and the Vegas strip. And while Tucson might not compare to Paris, we're still pretty unique. Imagine having dinner suspended over Sabino Canyon, the San Xavier del bac Mission, Old Tucson Studios, or even Fourth Avenue. A seat at Dinner In The Sky costs about $300. But while the price might seem hefty, it includes a limousine ride to the restaurant, appetizers and cocktails on the ground, and a four-course dinner in the sky. Save your money, folks. Would you participate in Dinner In The Sky in Tucson? Let us know in the comments.
