Food Truck Finds: Hot Trucks & Roundups July 4 – 10

Food Truck Finds: Hot Trucks & Roundups July 4 – 10

Jul 4, 20164 min read

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy! In Tucson, there’s still plenty to do and eat, even after the snowbirds have long hit the road. Come get your frosty treat, your hot and bubbly cheesy pie, and your smokin’ meat from this week’s Tucson Food Truck Finds.

Mustache Mike’s of Tucson

Life is just a little bit sweeter when you enjoy a frozen dessert on a blistering day. And refreshing doesn’t even begin to describe Italian ice: it’s like a sorbet but there’s no dairy or egg in the recipe.

  • Best Seller: Da Bomb. This icy delight is a luscious mix of cherry, lemon and blue raspberry swirl. Mmm-mm.
  • Recommended: Mango Italian Ice Sundae. Mustache Mike’s layers vanilla ice cream between your choice of Italian Ice for these special sundaes, but the tropical flavor of mango really makes it “brain freeze”-worthy.
  • Where to Find: Hit them up at the Sahuarita Food Truck Roundup on the first Tuesday of every month. In between, the cart parks at school, church and community events in Tucson, Sahuarita, Vail and Marana.

For more information, visit Mustache Mike’s of Tucson on Facebook.

Road Running Wood Fired Pizza

This mobile pizza kitchen uses an imported, wood fired brick oven to create its array of crowd-pleasing pies. If you’ve never experienced a hot and tasty pizza baked in front of blazing logs of wood, you are missing out.

  • Best Seller: Cheese. What hungry young’un doesn’t like the hot, melty goodness of a cheese pizza? Come on!
  • Recommended: Mushroom, Spinach, and Gorgonzola cheese. Not every pizza is red sauce and mozzarella, and this tasty “white pizza” proves that quite nicely.
  • Where to Find: The huge white trailer will be out Monday, July 4 at the July 4th Celebration at James D. Kriegh Park in Oro Valley. Find it on scheduled days at the Residence Inn Airport at 2660 E Medina Rd, Tucson and at the Continental Ranch Community Association roundups at 9150 N Coachline Blvd in Marana.

For more information, visit Road Running Wood Fired Pizza on Facebook.

Jays Barbecue

Just so you know, there are different types of Texas-style BBQ, depending on what part of the state you favor. Jays is Central Texas style–the meat is dry rubbed and smoked for 14 to 16 hours using pecan wood. Sauces are usually not found, but Jays has it on hand anyway, if that’s your preference.

  • Best Seller: Smoked Brisket. Order a half pound of meat. Aw, heck. Take home a whole brisket. Many of Jays customers do just that. It’s well worth it.
  • Recommended: Pulled Pork. You might say, “put a ring on it.” Great BBQ, that is. Jays proudly shows off the true mark of a good, slow-smoked meat: a pink ring under the crust. Get the pulled pork with sides and/or sandwich-style.
  • Where to Find: The red trailer is found at 1710 N Stone Ave, just north of East Elm St in Tucson. Hours are now extended, due to high demand. Go Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Most folks order by the pound, so get there early.

For more information, visit Jays Barbecue on Facebook.

More details on Tucsonfoodie.com #tucson #tucsonfoodieTwo days at @Hiltonelcon felt like the ultimate staycation. Between the pools, hot spring and cold plunge, water slide, yoga, live music, complimentary bike rentals, and their nostalgic “Summer Rewind” experience, there was always something to do. We never left the resort.

The highlight at their on-site restaurant, Epazote Kitchen & Cocktails, was the Pollo Con Rajas - perfectly cooked chicken over a rich creamed poblano, onion, and corn mestizaje. And if you’re at their Sundance Café for breakfast, get the pozole. It’s made from a family recipe that became such a guest favorite it earned a permanent spot on the menu.

Although El Conquistador licenses the Hilton brand, it’s owned and operated by a local company. The culinary team sources much of its meat and produce from Arizona.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or just looking for an incredible dinner with Catalina Mountain views, this spot is worth adding to your list. 🌵🌞
