At the northwest corner of Orange Grove Road and Oracle Road is an unexpected foodie paradise.

For one, Sushi on Oracle is one of Tucson’s hidden gems for an agedashi tofu and sushi fix.

But if smoke and spice are what you seek, look into the fiery cuisine next door at The Parish, a southern gastropub and our happy hour pick of the week.

With no shortage of bacon and Louisiana flair, it’s a fun place to eat. The dark wood furniture, pink and black walls, dainty chandeliers, quirky paintings adorning the walls, and occasional live music maintain the lively vibe.

Parish’s happy hour has $5 noshes, $3 wells and drafts, $4 glasses of house wine, and $6 specialty cocktails.

The drink selection is no joke with countless jars of house-infused liquors and over 40 craft beers. Staff is impressively knowledge about the beer, so don’t be afraid to ask questions.

The cocktail menu stands out as refreshing, too. The Dutch Well Water features house-infused cucumber tequila, lime, peach bitters, and lavender water while the Front Porch Tea includes Georgia peach vodka, lemon, green tea, and mint, making it perfect for the patio as it starts heating up outside.

On the food side, Guedry’s Gumbo is complex, so they know their dark roux. The rib-sticking stew with chicken and Andouille sausage makes you want to curl up in a blanket, but then the addictive heat kicks in and you start shoveling down more bites.

The Parish has also mastered the art of crisping. Their fries are one of our favorites, and the hushpuppies with green onion sauce will make you forgot about your figurative New Orleans grandma’s hushpuppies.

Lastly, their irresistible bacon popcorn — it sounds deceptively simple, but after your first bite, you’ll start planning ways to sneak this into movie theaters.

The Parish is located at 6453 N. Oracle Rd. and is open daily. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. For more information, visit theparishtucson.com. To keep up with their specials, visit their Facebook page.

IOU Sushi III has closed. The all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant on North Oracle Road announced the news on Facebook after about 10 years in Tucson. “This is the hardest post I’ve had to write,” the owners said. The post continued, “we have met some great friends who have become family to us.” Tucson Foodie first visited the restaurant in 2017, when it operated as IOU Sushi IV.

Anne Rysdale built @sheltercocktaillounge in 1961 with concrete walls, lava rock, and Cold War nerves. Today, owners Pam Santangelo and Kevin Breutzmann keep the Tucson bar exactly as regulars remember it. Inside, martinis share space with JFK memorabilia, a vintage atomic chandelier, and a suit of armor named Charlie. “Tucson is changing so much, but this has stayed the same. It’s a time capsule,” Santangelo said.
