Mardi Gras Festival returns to the Parish with an alligator roast

Feb 21, 20191 min read

Each year, the southern fusion gastropub brings the spirit, atmosphere, and revelry of the Big Easy to Tucson.

This year, The Parish is letting the good times roll with its annual Mardi Gras Festival from 2 p.m. – midnight on Tuesday, March 5.

You can expect classic Cajun food out of chef Travis Peters and his crew, like a Crawfish Boil with the traditional fixings, an Alligator Roast that’s wrapped in bacon, an Abita Beer tap takeover, and live music with a massive amount of beads to go all around.

The cover charge is $10 per person, food and beverage not included. Reservations aren’t needed to get down and party but it is going to be first come first served.

Performances by:

  • Bad News Blues Band
  • Brian Dean Trio
  • River Road Ramblers
  • Mighty Joel Ford and Michael P.
  • Mike Herbert Prison Band
  • Muffulletas
  • Tiny House of Funk
  • In Tha Zone

Much like the previous Mardi Gras Festivals, The Parish is raising funds for non-profit organization Lower Nine. The group is dedicated to the long-term recovery of New Orleans’ historic Lower Ninth Ward from Hurricane Katrina and the levee breaches of 2005.

If you’d like to donate $50 to the organization, the bands will play “When the Saints Go Marching In.”

The Parish Gastropub is located at 6453 N. Oracle Rd. For more information about the Mardi Gras festival, call (520) 797-1233 or visit theparishtucson.com.

More about Matt

At a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.

He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.

If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.

@Seiscantina has permanently closed its Joesler Village location at 1765 E. River Rd., the Muñoz family announced today.

Three Seis Kitchen locations remain open at Tanque Verde Road, Oro Valley, and Mercado San AgustĂn. The family says guests can still find their favorite dishes and familiar faces at the remaining locations.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share some bittersweet news. After much reflection, we have made the difficult decision to permanently close our Joesler Village newly rebranded Cantina Location. Saying goodbye to the regular guests who became faces we looked forward to seeing every week, we are truly sorry that we cannot continue serving you here. You turned a simple dining room into a vibrant community gathering place, and for that, we will be forever grateful.”

On a hierarchical tier list of comfort food, mac and cheese ranks among the top. An ideal mac and cheese blends rich creaminess with a kiss of crunch. A velvety cheese sauce coats every noodle without being lumpy or gloppy. Chefs use blend of artisanal cheeses to create depth and sharpness. Roasted poblano, salty cured meat, and crunchy breadcrumbs add texture and complexity without overwhelming the dish. The right pasta shape, such as cavatappi or shells, helps the sauce adhere better than standard elbow macaroni and offers a more toothsome bite.
