Chef Kyle Nottingham shows off his skills on the TBS TV show ‘Rat in the Kitchen’

Apr 14, 20222 min read

Local chef Kyle Nottingham is set to make his debut on the television show “Rat in the Kitchen,” which airs on TBS on Thursday, April 14 at 9 p.m. Tucson time.

Nottingham, who’s also a partner at Ares CollectivePrep & Pastry, Commoner & Co., August Rhodes Bakery, and Flora’s Market Run — has made television appearances in the past, including “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” but he’s especially excited for everyone to see this experience

“This show will have you on the edge of your seat, glued to the screen in suspense, holding your sides in laughter, all while giving you the warm fuzzy feeling watching your hometown chef compete in a culinary showdown,” said Nottingham.

If you didn’t get a chance to catch the first two episodes, here’s what the show is all about:

“Hosted by the iconic roasting queen and comedian Natasha Leggero and celebrity chef Ludo Lefebvre, ‘Rat in the Kitchen’ is a game of high stakes cat and mouse where viewers get to play detective. A mix of professional chefs and passionate home cooks compete in a series of creative cooking challenges, earning cash in their bank for every dish that impresses Chef Ludo while attempting to expose an undercover mole (the rat) determined to sabotage the dishes and undermine their chances at victory.”

When the episode rolls into its final act, both cooks and viewers will decide who they think is the rat. If the cooks guess correctly, they win, but if they’re completely wrong, then the rat walks away with “the cheddar.”

More about Matt

At a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.

He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.

If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.

A new Chihuahuan-style restaurant and tortilla factory is opening in Tucson! @Tortillaschiwas debuts Thursday at 914 N. Grande Ave. in Barrio Hollywood, inside the former Grande Tortilla Factory.

Phoenix restaurateurs Armando Hernandez and chef Nadia Holguin, a married couple originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, are behind the project. The James Beard-nominated duo will bring a roughly 15-item menu featuring dishes from their Phoenix restaurants, including Cocina Chiwas and Espiritu Cocktails + Comida.

Tortillas Chiwas will initially be open Thursdays through Saturdays from 5–10 p.m. with just 38 seats. Reservations are available on OpenTable. The team also plans to mill nixtamal on-site for hand-pressed tortillas, continuing the building’s long tortilla-making history.
