Pure Poke & Prep: Fast, fresh poke by the bowl or by the ounce

Just because poke’s been having a run of it lately, doesn’t mean there’s no room for newcomers. If a restaurant is offering great food and service in a convenient location at a reasonable price, there’s always room for another  option. And when that option is doing things even better than the competition, like offering fresh cut, high quality fish daily and house made sauces, well… even better.

Pure Poke & Prep opened in what was formerly Hoki Poke on East Grant Rd. When this sort of thing happens, unless you were a loyal customer, you probably don’t even notice. But when it’s something this special, you might want to give it a try.

Pure Poke specializes in authentic Hawaiian poke. This means it’s not just raw fish cut into cubes. To clarify, the fish is cut into cubes daily, but it’s also tossed in housemade marinades made with authentic Aloha Soy.

Just here for the fish

For patrons that are just wanting fish to eat, for whatever reason, poke is available by the ounce in 8, 16, and 32 ounce servings. So if you’re eating paleo or needing clean protein, there’s that option. And there’s a load of poke options available in both sustainable harmoniously raised Velasso salmon and AAA Saku Ahi tuna varieties. Those options include Kahuku tuna and salmon, Momo, Haole, and simply straight tuna and salmon. There’s also two shrimp options: regular and honey gochujang.

Naturally, there are poke bowls, too.

Bowl choices

Over in the bowl department, it’s most of the toppings you’ve come to expect in a poke bowl with a few additions. And, of course everything is super fresh. Just like the fish, the veggies are cut fresh multiple times a day. Choose (or mix) from four different bases of white rice, brown rice, sesame noodles, and baby salad greens.

Depending on how hungry you are, you can opt for one ($13.50), two ($15), or three ($16.50) scoops of poke (see above for poke options). Additional protein add-ons are $1.50 and include items such as crab, squid salad, and tofu.

Poke bowl mix-ins include:  avocado (+$1.50), purple cabbage, organic mixed carrots, cilantro, cucumbers, cucumber salad, edamame, ginger, green onion, jalapeño, mango, seaweed salad, maple-soy roasted sweet potatoes, wasabi, watermelon radish, and white onion.

Finish off your bowl with one or more of Pure Poke’s house made sauces. Get as many as you want as there’s no up-charge for extra. Choices include kahuku, haole, spicy mayo, Hawaiian chile water, ponzu, spicy soy, toasted sesame oil, ginger garlic, lemon cilantro, soy, sriracha, and wasabi cream.

Lastly, add some crunch with another of Pure Poke’s unlimited toppings: crispy onion, wonton strips, crispy jalapeño, sesame seeds (regular or black), crunchy garlic, house made furikake, spicy furikake, pure blend, and red dragon. Pure Poke & Prep is open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. There’s plenty of seating available for dine-in (no patio), and take-out is also available.

And if you’re at their Sundance Café for breakfast, get the pozole. It’s made from a family recipe that became such a guest favorite it earned a permanent spot on the menu. 

Although El Conquistador licenses the Hilton brand, it’s owned and operated by a local company. The culinary team sources much of its meat and produce from Arizona. 

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or just looking for an incredible dinner with Catalina Mountain views, this spot is worth adding to your list. 🌵🌞
