NOW OPEN: Raspaderia El Sahuaro — Downtown’s New Snack Bar

Jun 6, 20241 min read

Hey, it’s getting super hot outside, isn’t it?

Luckily, Raspaderia El Sahuaro is now open and ready to cool you off with its raspados, milkshakes, and other snacks at 266 E. Congress St.

The new shop, which is in the former HUB Ice Cream Parlor location, is owned and operated by the same family behind the quesabirria-driven restaurant La Yaquesita on Fourth Avenue.

What’s on the Menu?

The original plan was to open a second La Yaquesita restaurant, but the space lacks a big enough kitchen and a raspados shop suits the area perfectly. Speaking of raspados, there are rotating flavors on the chalkboard menu like strawberry, mango, pineapple, tamarindo, peach, cocoa, vanilla, pecan, etc.

Raspaderia El Sahuaro is much more than raspados, though. Corn Cocktails (corn, mayo, white cheese, butter, and lime), milkshakes, sundaes, and a full-on Tostitos menu (chips layered with goodies). The first to catch my eyes was the TostiCeviche and then the TostiLoko — a mix of chaca-chaca candy, peanuts, cucumber, jicama, lime, and chamoy).

The shop even offers sandwiches and wraps!

All are $12 each or less including a classic BLT, a Club, Tuna Sandwich, and a Torta with ham, pepper jack, lettuce, tomato, onion, and jalapeño on the sandwich menu. There are three chicken-themed wraps (which are subject to change at any time) — Buffalo Chicken Wrap, Chicken Chipotle Wrap, and Caesar Chicken Wrap.

The shop is open 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Tuesday – Thursday, 11 a.m. – past midnight on Friday – Saturday, 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Sunday, and closed on Monday.

Raspaderia El Sahuaro is located at 266 E. Congress St. For more information, check them out on Yelp.

More about Matt

At a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.

He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.

If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
