Local baker, Sydney Adams, is throwing her grand opening for Sydney’s Sweet Shoppe from noon – 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 1.
What started out in her home — baking for friends and co-workers — is blooming into something much bigger in the form of her first brick-and-mortar location in the Bear Canyon Shopping Center.

The inspiration and love she has for baking derive from her grandmother and the recipes nestled inside of a cookbook, which carries recipes dating back to the 1940s. Seeing the joy that her grandmother received from baking is something she shares, too.
“Baking is my passion, more specifically, pie,” said Adams. “Pie has always been my family’s favorite dessert and my grandma was the pie baker. My grandma has always been known for her pies, winning many contests in her home state of Illinois.”

When she felt the confidence rise, Adams decided to begin baking for others using her family’s recipes — the crust being the “hallmark” of her pies.
She started out baking in a space inside Cook Tucson, sold her pies online, occasionally delivered, set up shop in several farmers markets throughout the city, and partnered with El Corral and Garrett’s Steakhouse — supplying her baked goods inside of the restaurants.
Throughout the summer, Adams gained even more supporters after being featured in a growing list of “100 black-owned businesses to support.”
“Being a part of this list truly allowed our business to be recognized in such a positive way and it has continued thus far,” said Adams.

So, after dishing out pies around the city, and spreading the joy of her grandmother’s recipes, she’s excited to have a spot she can call her own.
Sydney’s Sweet Shoppe will specialize in fruit, creams, and seasonal flavors. During the grand opening, you’ll be able to snag a variety of pie sizes, pie slices, half pies, and other sweet treats, like cookies, bars, and small cakes.

Hours of operation are noon – 6 p.m. on Tuesday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, and closed on Sunday and Monday.
Sydney’s Sweet Shoppe is located at 8969 E. Tanque Verde Rd, Suite 209. For more information, call (520) 777-7133 or visit sydneyssweetshoppe.com.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
