Up in the Phoenix area, the restaurant has been making eaters feel like they’ve “hopped across the pond.” Now, their fish and chips, sausage rolls, sticky toffee pudding, and other scrumptious dishes have landed in Tucson.
In a spot that previously housed an Irish pub and a Mexican restaurant, The Union Jack British Pub & Restaurant is opening its doors on Monday, October 17 at 1800 E. University Blvd.

Dr. Sukhi Ghuman, a native of England’s East Midlands region and former resident of Nottingham, opened the first Union Jack restaurant in Scottsdale near the airport. After its 2021 opening, many fell in love with the atmosphere and British fare — so much so that the second location in Mesa came to fruition shortly after.
“At The Union Jack, we pride ourselves on serving up variety. We’re the leader of the pack by emphasizing consistently high-quality delicious food delivering a warm, welcoming environment. Our generous portions are moderately priced. Our casual atmosphere couldn’t be more transporting — it’s like you’re right there in a British pub.”
Shortly after the Mesa location’s debut, Ghuman received several requests to bring the restaurant to Tucson. Ghuman feels that the location near the university is a prime location in order to connect the school’s local and international community.

What’s on the menu?
There’s a lot to choose from on the menu like the Full English Breakfast, which comes with two sausages, two pieces of bacon, two eggs, black and white pudding, baked beans, grilled tomatoes, sauteed mushrooms, and a piece of toast. Other popular dishes at the two Phoenix locations include the Fish and Chips, Edinburgh Burger, and Shepherd’s Pie — loaded with ground lamb, peas, carrots, onions, and leeks topped with mashed potatoes.
If you’ve still got an appetite after your meal, the Spotted Dick Pudding is awaiting your arrival. The dessert, a steamed pudding served with either ice cream or custard, is a popular British dish that dates back to the mid-19th century.
For fans of imported brews, the pub will have select beers from Britain, Ireland, mainland Europe, and even some domestic choices as well.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
