Often when I think of where I want to go when desiring a cold beer, hot wings, and conversation with strangers, the Wooden Nickel Tavern almost immediately comes to mind.
They have some of the best wings in town, a stellar Fish Friday special, burger deals a couple of days a week, and heck, if you get cash out of the ATM to pay for your tab they’ll give you a free drink. Right on!

Anniversary Party
It’s been one of my go-to spots in recent years and it’s heartwarming to know that the establishment is celebrating its 40th anniversary on Saturday, March 9 at 1908 S. Country Club Rd.
During the 40th anniversary party, Wooden Nickel will have multiple local vendors set up on-site from noon – 5 p.m., $2.50 beer specials throughout the day (Bud Light, Coors Light, and Miller Light), and $0.50 wings from noon – 8 p.m.

With a spacious patio, plenty of tables and chairs, a jukebox, and pool tables, it’s a downright party on Saturday (and any other day of the week).
Every other day of the year, the Wooden Nickel has a daily Happy Hour from 3 – 6 p.m. and then a daily special, too.
One of the more popular specials is Wings Wednesday — it’s $1 a wing — and the flavors include Hot, BBQ, Garlic Parmesan, Teriyaki, Mango Habanero, Hot BBQ, Honey Mustard, and Lemon Pepper.
Daily Specials
- Monday: $10 Burgers + Fries
- Tuesday: Green Chili Special
- Wednesday: $1 Wings
- Thursday: Tacos Dorado Special
- Friday: Fish Tacos and Fish Basket Special
- Saturday & Sunday: $9 Wings + Fries or $10 Burgers + Fries

So, gather up your friends and head down to the Wooden Nickel on Saturday, March 9 to congratulate them on 40 years.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
