Brunch Must: Eggs Provençal at Ghini’s French Caffe

Jun 28, 20191 min read

Weekends are for late-morning dining on a patio in the shade, with your dog at snoozing at your feet, while laughing with your friends.

Not just any patio – the patio at Ghini’s French Caffe with a plate of freshly prepared Eggs Provençal floating towards you.

Aside: I moved here in the mid-’90s and this was one of the first dishes I ate (and continue to eat several times a year).

The ingredients are fresh, simple, local, full of flavor, and scream “summer” (eating it year round is acceptable, too).

The Eggs Provençal features locally sourced tomatoes, fresh garlic, thyme, and farm fresh eggs. Although the dish comes with toast (freshly baked by the owner’s father next door at La Baguette), get the hashbrowns — crispy potatoes in butter (yes, please).

Truthfully, the dish is perfectly balanced and seasoned, but the rich butter-basted eggs star. Yes, it takes a little extra time to baste those eggs, but it’s worth it.

The browned butter mixed with the creamy yolk, the bite of garlic, and fragrant thyme transport you to a French paradise.

Get an iced Breve on the side and enjoy your long, luxurious brunch experience (again and again).

Ghini’s French Caffe is located at 1803 E. Prince Rd. For more information, visit ghiniscafe.com.

IOU Sushi III has closed. The all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant on North Oracle Road announced the news on Facebook after about 10 years in Tucson. “This is the hardest post I’ve had to write,” the owners said. The post continued, “we have met some great friends who have become family to us.” Tucson Foodie first visited the restaurant in 2017, when it operated as IOU Sushi IV.

Anne Rysdale built @sheltercocktaillounge in 1961 with concrete walls, lava rock, and Cold War nerves. Today, owners Pam Santangelo and Kevin Breutzmann keep the Tucson bar exactly as regulars remember it. Inside, martinis share space with JFK memorabilia, a vintage atomic chandelier, and a suit of armor named Charlie. “Tucson is changing so much, but this has stayed the same. It’s a time capsule,” Santangelo said.
