Celebrating National Gluten-Free Day (January 13) in Tucson

Jan 12, 20234 min read

Friday, January 13 officially marks National Gluten-Free Day, and, here in Tucson, we’re lucky enough to have a wide variety of gluten-free options.

If you’re unfamiliar with gluten or what it means to be gluten-free, here’s a nifty breakdown:

“Gluten is an enriched protein added to select grains to improve their baking qualities and increase their ability to rise. A gluten-free diet means avoiding foods that contain wheat, rye, and barley, typically found in bread. Gluten can also sneak up in beer, sauces, dressings, and foods manufactured on shared equipment used to process gluten-containing products.”

While several local restaurants in Tucson offer gluten-free options on their menus, here’s a few that we’ve hand-picked to get your gluten-free journey off on the right food.

So, on January 13 and beyond, have some fun eating gluten-free alongside your gluten-free friends.

The pizza joint offers a gluten-free pizza crust as well as a 100% vegan mozzarella substitute. Tucson Foodie’s Sariya Jarasviroj is a fan of their eggplant lasagna — a pretty solid option for gluten-free eaters.

Gluten-free options are even offered down to the pita to dip into their famous hummus.

Between the pools, hot spring and cold plunge, water slide, yoga, live music, complimentary bike rentals, and their nostalgic “Summer Rewind” experience, there was always something to do. We never left the resort.

The highlight at their on-site restaurant, Epazote Kitchen & Cocktails, was the Pollo Con Rajas - perfectly cooked chicken over a rich creamed poblano, onion, and corn mestizaje. And if you’re at their Sundance Café for breakfast, get the pozole. It’s made from a family recipe that became such a guest favorite it earned a permanent spot on the menu.

Although El Conquistador licenses the Hilton brand, it’s owned and operated by a local company. The culinary team sources much of its meat and produce from Arizona.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or just looking for an incredible dinner with Catalina Mountain views, this spot is worth adding to your list. 🌵🌞
