OMG: Maru’s “Mega Buta” ramen features three kinds of pork in a tonkotsu broth

OMG: Maru’s “Mega Buta” ramen features three kinds of pork in a tonkotsu broth

Feb 19, 20222 min read

This time of year, there’s cold days, and not-so-cold days.

It’s a subtle reminder of the heat that’s to come interspersed with what makes our winters so appealing.  One of the more enjoyable aspects of Tucson winters is how they kind of just blend into the fall. It’s not like back east, where there’s clear differences between fall and winter. Maru’s latest addition, Mega Buta Ramen is just the right dish for the season.

Meat heavy – batu means pork – the Mega Buta Ramen includes spicy ground pork, pork charshoo, and pork katsu in a tonkotsu broth, which is also pork based.  While Maru offers one of the more impressive and broad varieties of both vegetarian and vegan options, this dish is for sure not one of them. You can check out Maru’s full menu here.

Seasonally, the team over at Maru, led by Yoshimatsu’s Yoshimi Tashima, roll out a new bowl or two (or three). Typically in the summertime, it’s a cold ramen. Now that we’re entering that in-between season of spring, this noodle bowl is a good, rich dish to indulge before it heats up outside.

Maru also offers a wide range of ramens, udon, curry rice bowls, and donburi along with a variety of small Japanese snacks and appetizers, like the onigiri, which is a triangular nori-wrapped rice ball filled with a handful of choices of proteins.

There’s also beer and sake. Maru is the only restaurant of its type in Tucson and dining in is truly a unique and preferable way to experience it.

Maru Japanese Noodle Shop is located at 1370 N. Silverbell Rd. at Speedway, in the Alberston’s shopping center. For more information, including contact, hours, and menu, visit marunoodle.com.

@Sonoranrestaurantweek runs from September 4 through 13, 2026, and it’s the perfect excuse to pair a day of Tucson sightseeing with a prix fixe meal. Since the Old Pueblo packs desert trails, historic missions, art districts, and a UNESCO City of Gastronomy designation into one metro area, visitors can easily build a full day around any interest and land near a Restaurant Week stop when it’s time to eat.

Swipe to see six itineraries built around Tucson’s core attractions, each paired with nearby restaurants participating in this year’s event. Menus and prices are subject to change, so it’s worth confirming details on the Sonoran Restaurant Week website before heading out.@Sonoranrestaurantweek runs from September 4 through 13, 2026, and it’s the perfect excuse to pair a day of Tucson sightseeing with a prix fixe meal.
