Tucson’s Whiskey Del Bac acquired in national spirits deal

Alcohol beverage portfolio No Sleep Beverage Inc. has acquired Tucson-based Whiskey Del Bac as part of a new multi-brand platform. The company announced the move alongside two additional acquisitions, Nine Banded Whiskey and Ume Plum Liqueur. Together, the three brands form the foundation of a broader growth strategy in the beverage alcohol sector.

Additionally, the West Palm Beach-based company positions the platform as its next phase of expansion. The firm previously focused on venture investing and consulting. Now, it will operate a consolidated portfolio of brands across key markets.

A portfolio approach to growth

CEO Nick Papanicolaou framed the acquisition strategy as a response to industry challenges.

“We believe the best way to invest in the beverage alcohol space is to roll up a portfolio of iconic brands, introduce efficiencies from the portfolio while professionalizing operations, and prepare them for exit when this industry has worked through the current down cycle,” he said in a press release.

Meanwhile, the company plans to leverage shared infrastructure across its brands.

“Selling costs are often the biggest barrier for a brand’s success,” CFO David No said in a press release. “By sharing infrastructure across a portfolio, we create operating leverage and synergies that improve each brand’s path to profitability.”

Whiskey Del Bac’s Tucson roots

Whiskey Del Bac brings a distinctly Southwestern identity to the portfolio. The Tucson distillery built its reputation on mesquite-smoked barley and Sonoran Desert influence. The brand has long stood out in the American single malt category.

Additionally, the company describes the whiskey as “an uncompromising and pioneering love letter to the Sonoran Desert that captures the spirit and terroir of their home.”

Co-founder Stephen Paul first explored mesquite-fired whiskey after a 2006 backyard conversation about Scotch and desert ingredients.

Then, Paul and his daughter Amanda built the brand into a family-run distillery. They officially launched Whiskey Del Bac in 2011 under Hamilton Distillers, with a focus on American single malt whiskey rooted in the Sonoran Desert.

Additionally, the name reflects deep regional ties. Whiskey Del Bac references Mission San Xavier del Bac and draws from English, Spanish, and Tohono O’odham language traditions.

Over time, the brand helped define a Southwestern identity in American whiskey. By using mesquite instead of peat, the distillery created a flavor profile that reflects Tucson’s landscape and culture.

As a result, Whiskey Del Bac grew from a small family operation into a nationally recognized craft distillery. Its flagship expressions, including Classic and Dorado, have earned industry recognition and built a loyal following. In 2020, they earned a James Beard Foundation nomination for Outstanding Wine, Spirits or Beer Producer.

Market outlook and expansion plans

However, No Sleep Beverage executives acknowledged broader industry headwinds.

“The market is pessimistic about beverage alcohol, ” CMO Charlie Rodman said in a press release. “It’s harder at the moment, but there remain ample opportunities for consumer-centric brands that can build an emotional relationship with their audience.”

Consequently, the company will initially focus on Phoenix, Tucson, Austin, and Southeast Florida. It also plans selective distribution in other markets.

What comes next

Looking ahead, No Sleep Beverage intends to expand its portfolio with additional complementary brands.

“We are excited to partner with these three great brands and bring them our tested, data-driven approach to scale them to their full potential,” Papanicolaou said.

As a result, Whiskey Del Bac enters a new phase of growth while maintaining its Tucson identity. The acquisition signals continued national interest in locally rooted spirits brands.
