Chef Maria Mazon of BOCA Tacos to open ‘SONA Tortillas De Maiz Y Bodega’

Chef Maria Mazon of BOCA Tacos to open ‘SONA Tortillas De Maiz Y Bodega’

Dec 9, 20212 min read

It’s been a productive year for Chef Maria Mazon of BOCA Tacos y Tequila on Fourth Avenue, and while she wasn’t busy competing on Top Chef or being a part of pop-up dinners, she’s put together a bodega and tortilla shop just behind her restaurant.

The market portion of SONA Tortillas De Maiz Y Bodega is hosting its Grand Opening at 527 N. Fourth Ave. on Friday, December 10. The tortilla shop within the space is planning to open sometime in the next couple of months.

The bodega, which has been in the works for nearly four years, will be selling goods from several local businesses like Yellow Brick Coffee, pasta from CERES, Maya Tea, POPPED Artisan Popcorn, items from Pivot Produce, and even some of Mazon’s local spices she uses at BOCA Tacos.

“We’ve got a bunch of chiles,” said Mazon. “I mean, a ton of chiles from all around Mexico like chiltepin from Hermosillo.”

SONA Tortillas is also a family venture. The idea of opening the market and tortilla shop came to fruition with the help of Mazon’s brother, Miguel Gil Lamadrid.

“I’m excited to showcase local brands,” said Mazon. “But besides all that, I’ve never had a business partner in my life, so my business partner is my brother — my baby brother, Miguel. We’re just doing it together. We’ve put a lot of effort into it and that’s what I’m really excited about.”

Keep an eye out for when the tortilla shop officially opens inside SONA Tortillas, but for now, there are plenty of other local items to take home or perhaps purchase for someone else this holiday season. Additionally, the bodega is hoping to sell wine and beer in the near future.

The hours of operation are noon – 6 p.m. on Thursday – Sunday, with Friday, December 10 being the official Grand Opening — perfect time for Fourth Avenue Winter Street Fair shoppers.

SONA Tortillas De Maiz Y Bodega is located at 527 N. Fourth Ave. For more information, follow SONA Tortillas on Instagram.

More about Matt

At a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.

He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.

If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.

IOU Sushi III has closed. The all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant on North Oracle Road announced the news on Facebook after about 10 years in Tucson. “This is the hardest post I’ve had to write,” the owners said. The post continued, “we have met some great friends who have become family to us.” Tucson Foodie first visited the restaurant in 2017, when it operated as IOU Sushi IV.

Anne Rysdale built @sheltercocktaillounge in 1961 with concrete walls, lava rock, and Cold War nerves. Today, owners Pam Santangelo and Kevin Breutzmann keep the Tucson bar exactly as regulars remember it. Inside, martinis share space with JFK memorabilia, a vintage atomic chandelier, and a suit of armor named Charlie. “Tucson is changing so much, but this has stayed the same. It’s a time capsule,” Santangelo said.
