Tucson Foodie vs. The Scorpion Bowl at Kon Tiki (VIDEO)

Tucson Foodie vs. The Scorpion Bowl at Kon Tiki (VIDEO)

Jun 8, 20171 min read

Dreams of a quick Polynesian getaway aren’t out of reach — you’ll find one of the nation’s oldest tiki bars, Kon Tiki, right here in the Old Pueblo.

Kon Tiki opened its doors in 1963 and has been serving up good times in an environment customers won’t find anywhere else.

Upon arrival, warm and welcoming “aloha” vibes emanate from the lush plants, mosaic tile river, and tiki heads.

Inside, you’ll find tiki huts, a fish tank, and unique fishbowl cocktails. The authentic decorations are from the 1930s — hand-carved tiki heads galore.

Kon Tiki’s Scorpion Bowl

But it’s Kon Tiki’s iconic Scorpion bowl that’s the highlight on the traditional, tiki-inspired cocktail menu.

The double fishbowl has a total of eight shots. It consists of light rum, dark rum, brandy, gin, and their secret Scorpion Nectar. The drink can either be enjoyed as a single, smaller cocktail or in the larger fishbowl.

Stay thirsty, my friends. Mahalo!

The post continued, “we have met some great friends who have become family to us.” Tucson Foodie first visited the restaurant in 2017, when it operated as IOU Sushi IV.

Anne Rysdale built @sheltercocktaillounge in 1961 with concrete walls, lava rock, and Cold War nerves. Today, owners Pam Santangelo and Kevin Breutzmann keep the Tucson bar exactly as regulars remember it. Inside, martinis share space with JFK memorabilia, a vintage atomic chandelier, and a suit of armor named Charlie. “Tucson is changing so much, but this has stayed the same. It’s a time capsule,” Santangelo said.
