Vegan Eats: 20 dishes to try for summer 2021

Jun 22, 20217 min read

For our first roundup since before the pandemic, we reached out to a popular and prolific local vegan Instagrammer, Hannah Hernandez aka Death Free Foodie.

A practicing vegan since 2017, Hernandez launched Death Free Foodie in 2019 to keep her never-ending flood of photos of local vegan dishes off her personal Instagram account.

With 5,000 followers and growing, she hopes it continues to grow and help anyone interested in the vegan lifestyle or just looking for new restaurant options.

Without further ado, here’s Hannah’s top 20 picks for summer 2021…

Lemon Fried Tofu at The 81 Hong Kong Cafe

625 E Wetmore Rd

Look for the many vegan symbols on The 81 Hong Kong Cafe’s menu! Lemon Pepper Fried Tofu, Basil Eggplant, and Veggie Chow-Fun are my current favorites.

Vegan Crush Pizza at Renee’s

7065 E Tanque Verde Rd

One of my favorite of Renee’s vegan dishes, Vegan Crush Pizza features red sauce, vegan pesto, zucchini, Kalamata olives, broccoli, artichokes, and peppers. Add Daiya for an extra $3. If you want a little extra, go for the garlic knots, and cinnamon rolls for dessert.

Veggie Sushi at Yoshimatsu Japanese Eatery

Free of lard and animal broth, La Indita’s delicious beans and rice are always made vegan. Their menu items marked with the red asterisk are vegetarian and can be made vegan. (Except anything with green sauce or mole.) The Veggie Delight; which I’d personally recommend, is a special combo plate with a potato taco, spinach enchilada, mushroom spinach tostada, served with beans and rice. Between the pools, hot spring and cold plunge, water slide, yoga, live music, complimentary bike rentals, and their nostalgic “Summer Rewind” experience, there was always something to do. We never left the resort.

The highlight at their on-site restaurant, Epazote Kitchen & Cocktails, was the Pollo Con Rajas - perfectly cooked chicken over a rich creamed poblano, onion, and corn mestizaje. And if you’re at their Sundance Café for breakfast, get the pozole. It’s made from a family recipe that became such a guest favorite it earned a permanent spot on the menu.

Although El Conquistador licenses the Hilton brand, it’s owned and operated by a local company. The culinary team sources much of its meat and produce from Arizona.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or just looking for an incredible dinner with Catalina Mountain views, this spot is worth adding to your list. 🌵🌞
